cb in 2nd gen?

I would like some ideas on what cb radio to buy and the best place to mount the unit and antenna. I am not looking for anything too fancy, just a small unit with an antenna that is easy to remove when not needed.

Thanks in advance

Mark do a search. I recall reading some threads and seeing pics of guys sticking radios in the din under the stereo. I think Cobra makes a model that will fit there. Another popular spot for mounting is under the glove compartment. I am getting ready to tackle this project pretty soon as well.

Another option if you don't smoke and want to get rid of the useless ashtray.

I've seen somewhere where someone removed the ashtray and installed a small cb in its place.

Or you can do what I did and cut the ashtray and lighter out completly and mount it there.

Here's some good info:

Small units that have good features that will fit DIN.

I have a Cobra 18 right under the CD player in my 95. Works slick and fits in there just perfect.

Stick a disconnect on the antenna and you are in business.

You guys running your CB's in the din did you just cut a hole in the back of it for the wires to run through?

Just pull out the pocket that is underneath and bolt in the CB.

My CD player has a flip face that interfered with the CB because the CB was so deep. I set the CD player out a little father so that it could flip and things were fine.

yeah i really love my set up of my Cobra 19 DX II as corey pointed out in the CB round up. just unscrewed the ash trey mount (2 screws i think) cut out the back plastic part so that they cb would fit back further and got some velcrow and i was done. and if i ever want to, i can always put the ash trey mount back in and nobody would ever know. the Cobra 19 DX II fits perfectly in the ash trey area. you really wouldn't even need velcrow there, but i said what they hey, better safe than sorry. there are more pictures of mine in the CB round up page wich corey has supplied the link for.

Yup I do.

I pulled out that little deal below the CD player as well as the surround, spread it and slid it in. Works like a charm.

you see that hole there where he has his sunglasses....my uniden cb fits perfectly right there in that hole but my question is what tool can or should i use to cut out enough room for the wires to go through and for me to connect the cable from the antenna to the cb.

Well, you mentioned that you might want to take it out when not using it so another option would be the Cobra C75 Like I have. You won't have to do any cutting and it unplugs when your not using it! Just another option...

I also like the cobra 75 shown above, thats what Scott and I both have. I got it thinking I would remove it all the time when I wasn't wheeling, but its pretty small and fits in my center console so I just leave it in there. Marc check out the "Mudshack" it's the only cb shop around here and the prices are decent. It's on El Cajon Blvd just past 70th.

like they said above, you don't cut anything away from the pocket, you just take it out. its like 4 screws and the larger cobra will fit right in as Flygtenstein said.

Thanks guys. I think I am going to do it the way Kevywevy did. I found Radio Shack has one for $50.00 that will fit right in. In fact I already pulled the ashtray assembly out.

Can I use the wires to the small light in the ashtray for the power and ground?

i don't know about using those wires, i would say probably not, but wait for somebody else to answer cause im not an electrical genius. thankfully when i bought my 4Runner used it already had the cb wiring coax and antenna mount in it.

those wire would be fine for an accesory on off, if you wired it to a relay, but using those wires with a relay will also require that you run an extra power wire.
most likely the best way to do it would be to use the cig lighter wires and splice the power wire on the cb into the hot wire for the cig lighter. then screw the ground somewhere suitable, after all the cig lighter is designed to power those kinds of things already and it will turn off with the key.
