Be Careful Wheeling -Tacoma Rollover at Tellico (Pics)

This happened recently at Tellico on "Guardrail". Nobody was seriously injured, but as you can see from the pics, some spectators came pretty close. Just posting as a reminder to pay attention to where you are standing when watching an obstacle. (I wasn't there to witness this, just linking from another page).

I am not exactly sure what happened there, but it looked a lot like a desperation WOT and when the tires caught grip, off he went. I am glad to hear no-one was injured, but you always gotta be ready for this stuff especially with such serious rock climbing. Thanks for the reminder.

There is another lesson from those pics: Holding your foot to the floor is not always the best way to get over an obstacle.

amazing what a roll cage could have done. i know not everyone feels like they would need one, but that just goes to show, thats one mod that should be considered very highly.

I talked in depth with someone that was there and he laid down in the seat when he felt it go over-may have saved his life. But if you look closely at the rolling pics-his foot was hanging out and got injured, but I'm not sure how serious. Story I got that was a big Jeep before him had a lot of trouble going up, and when the Tacoma started-he went right up, probably got excited, too much skinny pedal and the end result was rollover. I was told that his spotter was yelling to get off the gas.

That tree that he landed against most definitely saved his life-it's a long way down from there. Those cables in the trees are there to prevent you from rolling down the mountain-there used to be a metal guardrail there, hence the trail name.

If you're doing obstacles like that I would now consider it a must after seeing those pics.

Roll cage welded to the frame is another point to make....(coming from a guy that has rolled in one only bolted to the floor!)

ouch! can't say what went wrong but I'm suspecting driver/spotter error? nonetheless holy moly!

good to see the others helping out real quick. I gotta give major props to the guy in the blue w/ the cami cap. He's on slide 25/26 and the first to react to go and help (based on the photos of course) Props man!

good to see the driver in good spirit!

in pic 19 you can see him laying down in the seat. Like he knew it was going to happen.
That or he was so out of control of his rig that he was bounced into that position.

Wow! I looked at it again and from pic 18-25 you can watch his spotter just barely making it out from under the truck before it hit him. Very fortunate that no one was hurt.
I agree that a roll cage should be high on the priority list of modifications. I am hoping to have one by the spring trip next year. Until then I hope to not be in the position where I will need one.

It's also a good point to make, you can see in slides 20-22, he didn't even turn the wheel or anything. I don't know if that's the right thing to do, but it almost looks like his reaction times were not even there. It seems to me the right thing to do in that sort of situation is to do whatever it takes, hit something to get you to not roll, if that's the choice you must make.

taking a look again, it looks like that tree he stopped on saved his life cuz that hill looks like it goes down for quite a bit more!!!

Probably driver adrenaline. The spotter is a guy named Jack, he competes in UROC and is very seasoned at Tellico-he has done every trail there in his IFS Tacoma tow vehicle. He now wheels Tom's (trailcarnage) old buggy. But nonetheless, he did just barely escape.

They pushed the roof out with a hilift, kicked out the windshield and drove it out of there. Toyota dependability!
