Carcol canister cracked...
What dose this do? Isn't this like an OEM oil catch can? I just spent $1003.52 @ the dealership and they tell me I need $2300 dollars more work!
-Carcol canister cracked and vacum won't purge or somthing...$432.65 to fix.
-Rack and pinon steering rack is VERY WORN on driver side...What dose this mean and how serious is it? Can I make it through the winter? $899.97 estimate to fix.
What do you all think? 1996 4runner SR5 by the way w/209,000 miles.
P.S. "Things just fixed for the $1003.52": Timming belt $349.99. Oil leaks around tensioner pullys & cam seals $328.65. Hood latch lock $110.32. Check engine light diagnostic. $89.99 (determination cracked crarcol canister.) Basic tune up $99.99 (just spark plugs)

you dont have to have a charcoal can to have your motor run. all it does is take pressure out of the gas tank mand filter it. you could easily run either a 3.0 or your year model canister. look on froogle of yahoo for the part and if you can find it its just a few 10mm bolts to replace it. easy. as far as th rack and pinion whats wrong with it a torn boot?

Not sure what they mean by rack is only worn on driver's side? Maybe they mean the tie rod is bad, a boot is torn, a bushing is bad, not exactly sure. Take it to an independent shop you trust and have them look at it. If you need a new rack, get one from here http://www.carsteering.com/ and have them install it.
Getting stuff done at the dealer is just plain expensive in general, but at least you'll be guaranteed to get OEM parts and it's usually easier to get things resolved if there's a problem later. Hopefully the waterpump has been replaced at some point in the recent future and if not you really should have that done too (don't ask me how I know).
If your truck has that many miles you probably should run some seafoam in it as well.

YEah screw fixing the charcol canister. I actualy broke the hoses off my charcol canister in my Integra GS-R with no issues so far.
They just said the actual rack for the rack and pinon steering was badly worn on the drivers side. I'm going to ask to see the damage for sure while its on the lift. They found it while looking a suspension noise I described.
The new sparks plugs show a big improvement in milage! CHANGE YOUR PLUGS!!
I put some Redline S-1 fuel system cleaner in too...that probably heped a bit.
