car trouble....please help

I have a '92 4Runner and for the past few days I've had problems starting it. Sometimes, it chokes for a little bit, but eventually starts. But, there've been a few times where I tried to start it and all I heard was a kind of clicking noise. Does anyone know what the prob could be?

Hey, welcome to the board by the way. Anyways. I had a similar problem when I got mine. It was start very hard and would reek of gas all the time. I later found out the that injectors were clogged up and the gas wasn't getting to where it was supposed to. So I came here and asked what is a good fuel injector cleaner and they told me Chevron Techron. I would give that a try first. It is really good stuff, but is rather expensive. Check that out. If that doesn't work, you may need a new starter or a better battery. But the fuel injector cleaner is alot cheaper and I would try that first. Goodluck! :fireman:

If all you hear is clicking and you hear the motor turning slowly or not at all (in which case it wouldn't start), my money is on a battery going dead.

Hello Alyssa, welcome to the forums.
Sounds like it could be two things.
My rig had both of those symptoms.

The one where it cranks and chokes, and then spews to life sounds like it could be the cold start injector.
It is a separate injector that is not part of the 6 for your cylinders.

It must be taken out to be cleaned or replaced.
The part is right around $100 from the dealer if that is what the problem is.
They replaced mine, and I never had that problem again.

The clicking you are getting sounds like bad contacts on the starter.
Toyota sells a contact kit that you can get to replace them, or they can do it for you.
More than likely though, they will want to replace the starter.
That is what I did two summers ago.
The reman. unit from Toyota was $200, and $100 labor to install.

Chris Geiger of All Pro Off Road has a good article here on replacing the contacts.

Often when the contacts are warn, you get the clicking noise. If you hold the key on for a bit, it warms up the contacts and will usually fire up.
That is what mine did before they gave out all the way.
