Can I put my 00' 4runner headunit into my dad's 97 4runner?
I'm getting a new headunit, so I don't need the my stock one and the buttons are bigger and easier for him to read on my 2000 headunit, so I want to swap it in for him. Is it a direct swap?

Umm, it may or may not work...(ya I know that doesn't answer your question) here's my dilema, I though all Toyota decks where compatible, simple plug and play, but they're not, as the newer ones (your 2000 with larger buttons) have a different type of plug in the back of the headunit that goes to the amplifer, but after the amplifer, I think it might work in the '97. I'm still looking into that.

It depends on a few things:
Does your dad's have an external amp?
Does your HU have an internal amp?
If your dad's has an external amp and your HU also has an external amp it may work. -or- If your dad's has no external amp and yours has an external amp, it will most likely work. His will have two connectors on the back of the HU and it may be able to plug into the external amp.
If your HU has an internal amp and his has an external amp it will only work if you take the wire harness from your stereo and splice it into his wiring.
Does that make sense? Its confusing, but the only way you will know is by pulling both HU and taking a look at the wire harnesses.

Maybe this will make more sense, This is your '97's
This is your 2000
Different, plugs into back of headunit, however after the amplifer (both units do feature an external amp, by the way), is a different story, I'm still investigating.
