California OHV Permit

I was told that i needed some sort of OHV permit since my truck is 2wd to enter San Gabriel OHV (CA). I guess normally since I go during the week they don't hassle me about being 2wd or 4wd. Is it the same permit that goes on ATVs? Will AAA issue me one or do i need to go to the DMV? What do I need to get one?

Thanks!

Really? I thought that OHV permits were to cover things like spark arrestors so you don't set us all on fire. As long as your vehicle is street legal, it should be okay.

The only reason I could imagine for that is that they don't want to come and tow you out when you get stuck. I think whoever gave you the info, though, is mistaken.

I have never been there, but I looked it up in a book that I have from Funtreks and they say that there is a fee ($8.00 per vehicle plus $5.00 for each bike, ATV, etc.) to enter the OHV area. So, I am guessing that if you needed some kind of special permit for your truck, then you can pick it up at the same place you pay the entrance fee (entrance off HWY39). Just guessing though, so you can always call the San Gabriel River Ranger District station in Glendora and ask them, 626-335-1251.

as long as your truck is street registered you dont need a special permit... i jsut spent the day at carnegie OHV out in livermore.... the ranger walked up to me and was like going to do some 4x4ing? and i said yes and handed him my $5... he walked over to the station, and gave me my recipt to tape on the windshield....... i guess he didnt know it was a 4x2, becasue it looks liek a 4x4, but that shouldnt matter.....

Azusa Cyn is weird. I've been there more than a few times and it's been free on weekdays (even one weekend the ranger let me in for free).
Then, one weekday as I was leaving a ranger drove up to me and asked if I paid and why not. He was kindof an a-hole about it.

There is a slot there to "self-pay" if no ranger is around- envelope has a tag for proof.

They get pissed if you get stuck and won't help you so don't get stuck!

they arent allowed to help you out unless there is iminent danger to life.... there are laws enacted that state that due to liability.... when i went out to hollister, they gave us a paper that said, the rangers cant help you if you get stuck. all vehicles that are broken are required to be towed out at your expense. here is a list of local tow companies that offer offroad recovery and their #s. the park isnt reponsible for any vehicle or person injury resulting from using the land

when we went up (Azusa Canyon) the ranger looked @ the truck, 4WDs got the green sticker on the lower part of the windshield, 2WDs got it on the top part. My friend moved his down (his rig is a 2WD). a ranger saw where the sticker was because some adhesive remaining had dust all over it and wrote him up a $55 ticket. This was for not having some registration sticker..... DMV website says CA reg. is good enuf for OHV parks. WHAT IS GOING ON!?!?!? i hope someone here knows..... thanks guys

What, exactly, was your friend driving? A vehicle that has a license to drive on the street (basically a license plate with up-to-date registration) and that can legally drive on-road can also legally drive off-road. No sticker required. OHV stickers are for rigs that are licensed for off-road only.

If your friend was driving a stree-legal vehicle, the ranger may have made a mistake. I say may have because it's unclear why your friend would have the sticker in the first place if his truck was stree-legal. If your friend was driving an OHV rig that needed a sticker, the ranger probably thought the faller sticker was a fake or one your friend found. If your friend still has the registration from the state, he may be able to get it dismissed.

It was a Ford Ranger with CA plates on it.

the ranger @ Azusa OHV gave me a paper with the Rules & Regs on it:

All vehicles must be properly registered with the State of California. Green sticker, red sticker, or street legal 4WD vehicles are allowed, no 2-wheel drive vehicles, go-carts, or any other non-traditional OHV without a green sticker will be allowed in the OHV area. 36 CFR 261.56

well then there you go.... the code # is there, but it doesnt sound right, CA doesnt have #s like that fir the vehicle code.... it could be a county imposed law though, and thats legal... the county can have its own laws that are stricter than the state or federal law
