California Cats
Ok, so i have a california spec 4runner, which means that it has 2 cats. So my question to you is since it originally came with 2 cats, would it be okay to replace the 2 cats with just 1? I dont see why not... I just don't wanna piss off my rear o2 sensor. I live in colorado so it wouldnt be against emission regulations

My 4runner actually has 1 a/f ratio sensor before the cats 1 oxygen sensor after the cats. Also, am not removing anything, I was wanting to replace the 2 w/ the one.

As to the technical question of would it be possible it can be done but a major pain in the behind. However why would you want to? What are you gaining besides dumping money into reworking the entire exhaust system?

For the record, its a federal offense to remove or otherwise modify a vehicles factory emissions setup. Although its not illegal to replace a cat, its is illegal to remove a cat ie remove two and switch to one.

Maybe his cats are toast and if you can get away with replacing one instead of spending extra money on a 2nd cat would be a plus if it would run the same but if the 2nd cat is necessary is what he is asking.
In Colorado we just have to pass a tailpipe test and if it can pass with one cat and still be clean as a non-Cali model then why not go with 1 cat but I think you do need both cats to run properly but I think URD sells a simulator which would make one cat work fine or am I incorrect on this assumption.

I apologize too and this is a viable discussion since I don't want to be a polluter but if I can save a few bucks and use one cat would be nice but if I do stick with the original 2 cat setup can use I easily use 2 aftermarket cats and get the same result or is one of them a dealer only item that will work. I'm going to crawl under my truck and see exactly how it is setup.
At the moment and hopefully many more years my emissions will be fine but it would be nice to have solid answers if I have to cross this bridge anytime soon.
