What was wrong with the stock cat?

Go with a magnaflow.

I thought 49-state WAS one cat in 2000. Only the Cali. spec had two cats until they went a single 50-state two-cat system in 2002. I am positive that was the case in 1999. If you have two cats, either your truck is Cali spec or someone put Cali. parts in it (90% sure as to 2000). What does the plate under the hood say?

Edit: Now I see that you said 2002 before and then 2000 in this last post. But in 2002 there was no 49-state or Cali. spec.--and the 50-state Federal had two cats.

Sucks owning old cars in CA. My Datsun CARB approved CAT cost me $260 (49 state legal ones were about $120).

LC engineering has CATs for aobut $300 -I think they are 50 state legal. I'd love to know a better, cheaper option, as mine is getting clogged and I may not pass smog next time....

The CARB rules are very specific. If an aftermarket cat has not been approved by CARB for the specific application it is illegal for both car owner and installer. What seems to have happened is that very few aftermarket manufacturer's got approvals for those years where CARB and Federal standards were different, or '98-'01, even though many make cats that work on the Cali. trucks. This is because you have the same cats certified for the same engine/automobile in 2002 but not in '98-'01.

If you have an appetite for pain, you can read about it here:

CARB Cat website

Although painful to use, you can look for approved units for your truck. No Magnaflows, Catco, or Eastern for my truck. (Fortunately, I don't live in Cali.). There is a company called Miller Cat that has approval for our trucks, (Model 61212/45212) but they don't sell online or have prices up. I guess you have to go there or call. Hope this helps someone.

I'm in Cali and have a high flow cat. I think it's a magnaflow and passed smog on the first try. The previous owner installed it but I'll try and dig up the reciept when I get home.

I guess you guys lucked out then.

It's illegal to sell/ship to someone in CA a non-CARB 50 state legal CAT. So if you guys bought from someone who used to be out of state, I guess that's how you got around it
