Over-torqued lug nuts are a pet peeve of mine...
And yes, I've snapped multiple studs over the last couple years getting them off. It's a combination of the initial over-torqueing, then me applying heavy off-angle pressure with the tire iron (me standing and jumping on it to break them free). Hopefully now that I've got an impact wrench, the off-angle pressure isn't a thing anymore.

Now, I watch, and make certain the tire guy ONLY torques the lug nuts to the FSM spec. WITH a torque wrench. Most of the guys are pretty understanding, although a few have looked somewhat annoyed that a non-tire guy is telling them how to do their job. Too bad, though. I'm paying them, they can do it right. The way *I* say to do it.
My regular mechanic does it that way, cause they know, after taking vehicles to them for a while now, that if I have to, I'll stand over their shoulder to make sure they do it right.

I've actually seen tire guys shear off a lug nut using an impact wrench, so it's not just because of off-angle pressure. I guess mechanics don't want to be bothered to check torque specifications for every bolt. It's too time consuming.
