Broke my ARB locker
went wheeling yesterday. The compressor was running the whole time. So I thought I had a leak somewhere. I get out of the truck and I hear hissing coming from the gas filler. I open it up and my extended diff breather is hissing.
locker still worked, and it would turn off as well. Any ideas on what I broke? Someone there mentioned that it could be do to incorrect install. I had it put in about a month or so ago.

Sound like you blew one or both of the seals. Actually quite common for ARB's to do this. Usually it's due to a faulty installation so you may be able to warranty it at the installer.

thanks ... so does he need to order a new seal? Which seal would it be? Does the whole third need to be pulled again?

yes, the third must be pulled to access the locker.

Like everyone is saying it's probably the 2 o-rings in the seal housing. If it is, they're a piece of cake to change out. You should be able to tell exactly where it's leaking from once you pull the 3rd out. That wasn't the case w/ mine. The locker has another seal inside. Changing it out requires resetting the gear backlash and I didn't feel comfortable doing it so took my entire 3rd to ARB. They took care of me and showed me exactly what to do in case I ever needed to do it again. ARB also ugraded my seal housing and bulkhead fitting to the newer style and gave me spare parts. They did all of this free of charge. Talk about a great company.

90% of the problems you have down the road are all related to install problems.
my first issue was they had the copper tube inside the diff too close to a rotating part and it rub out a hole into it so diff fluid came out through the blue line all the way to the solenoid. since i mounted the compressor in the back cargo area, smelling 90 weight was a common occurance to me.
2nd issue was a bad clamping down on the o-rings so that led to leaks.
finally had a real shop working with rear ends only work on it, and only problems has been due to blue lines cracking...

ok well I called the guy up. He said to check the pressure gauge to see what it was reading at. He said if it doesn't build up enough pressure then that could be causing the problem as well. Does this make sense? If there wasn't enough pressure the locker wouldn't engage right?
anyway I'll go out at lunch and see what the pressure is reading at, and give him a call back.

you have a leak inside the differential. no doubt about it...
it's either due to faulty install or the pressure got too high and blew a seal. either way, if it's coming out of the breather extension, then the air is leaking at the locker and the third has to be pulled.

if your pressure switch is 80-105, then it turns the compressor on when the pressure drops to 80 and turns it off again at 105. The locker is designed for 80-90. The higher pressure going to the locker probally blew the double o-rings and they need to be replaced. hopefully, you didn't blow the internal one. you need to get a regulator on the line between the comp/tank and the locker and set it to 85. that way you can run your tank at 105 and the locker at 85. if you can't find a regulator to work, then get an arb pressure switch.

went out and checked the pressure gauge .. it turns off at 100 just like it supposed to. The locker should not have blown at 100 psi. I talked it over with Brian (otter) and he agreed its probably a ring, and said to bring it in. I offered to order the parts and he flat out said "no, if this is b/c of a bad install, then there is no reason for you to have to pay for anything" .. so hes going to order the parts today, and give me a call at the end of the week to set up an install date.
