Block and Head Performance Mods fo the 5vz
Good day YotaTech!
Im planning on doing a 3.4L swap and I was wondering what internal mods can I do on my new 5vz? I plan on swapping it and never having to take it out again, so I wanna do everything as best as possible. I heard changing the camshaft is a good idea. Maybe also boring it a little? Someone tried moddng it into a direct injection maybe?
Thanks in advance!!

Ok, thanks. So no mods in this engine. However, I think some people, like i said, have changed their cams when they did a rebuild. Any info on that?
Oh, Mt Goat? Thats a very impressive ride you have!! Do you have any write-ups on it??

the only thing i would do to a 3.4 is maybe put a performance cam and headers on it. besides that, do an intake/snorkel and a 2nd gen ( black ) supercharger... you'll be happy with the numbers.

You know, we have all been there. We pack everything up and realize we could had done something better! I heard that some people change the camshaft on these engines... some switched them with Camry ones, others with a set from LC Engineering (close to $1k though). Not a lot of concrete info on that, and wanted to know if anyone knew something about it.

unless you're gonna build it for boost (turbo), then leave it alone. While youve got it out, headers might be nice to put on, other than that...just wasting good $$ that you could have spent on a supercharger/urd fuel kit.

However, I am a little interested in the turbo. Is it worth it? (I see you have one.)

"Is the turbo worth it?" Oh jeez, where do i start. It can be the most fun you've ever had in a truck/4runner, however it can be the single most frustrating experience in your life too. Everything you need will have to be custom made - turbo manifold, cross over pipe, drivers side manifold, downpipe, exhaust, intercooler, etc... then you have to deal with the heat issue. Then you have to deal with a piggyback computer & tuning the beeyotch can take the better part of your life to get it running the way it needs to be.
So is it worth it? depends, do you have the skill to fab? Do you have another vehicle to drive while working onthis one? Do you have the $$ to support this bad habit? Thats what it comes down to. It is much easier to slap on a supercharger & fuel goodies and leave it alone.
I have spent the better part of a year getting my system completed, i am just getting to tune it, so its definately something that can take a lot of time.....but the payoff is having a turbo'd 4x4 that can smoke most other cars around and the sound is too darn sweet...gives me the biggest grin every time i hear that turbo spooling up.....

You could always port and polish the heads for better flow. As far as the block, don't know if it can be bored out much. The internals are pretty much rock solid on these, so theres some room but not much for improvement. But bolt ons are where you'll see some gains.

STOCK cams please! LCE's are $$$$$ and stock cams will work better with FI anyway in many cases. Spend your mulah on the SC and URD's FTC unit with either injectors or 7th injector setup, you won't be dissapointed!
Yes, I would do DT headers or similar with 2.25 exhaust for sure... make sure you do a leakdown and a good check of the engine since it is new to you I assume...
Good luck!

i think i am about the only person that has really built a NA motor for the 3.4.
Here is what i did:
**3.4 block bored .40 over--FYI--no issues
**Manely high Flow valves
**Dough Thorely Ceramic Headers--Highly recommended
**Magna Flow spun Cats
**Custom Exhaust
** "O" throttle body gasket
**Weasy2k Cams--(out of business now)
**I also run the larger 240 versus 230 CC injectors (not like its a big deal--but hey)
**Full rotating assembly balancing--Balanced everything from Harmonic balancer to pressure plate--it is smooth
The heads flow great so you dont need to port them or anything. BUT, i would highly recommend you do the electronics upgrades from Underdog Racing Development...I havent yet because I started a business and honestly, my truck comes second right now
Also, you can put a set of camary cams in thier but it will lower low end torque and increase your high end....
People who ride in my 4runner as is say its as peppy as an SC'ed motor
Thats my experience--but overall, i think an SC would be cheaper.....

Any idea as to where to find those valves? Also, did you balanced every rotating part...?

yeah--this is an old thread--i got tired of the political correctness here on yotatech and decided to spend time on other more "Adult" sites (not the porn kind).
Yes, .04 not .4--sorry but i figure you got the idea
Electronics mods from URD like thier MAF-2 system--dont remember all the names but if you are serious about buying i would give them a call.
But, the motor does great and pulled my sisters car on a Uhaul car transport all the way from Feyettville Arkansas to Austin Doing 60-70mph.
IF--YOU can find a great motor guy they can get you the right valves and just +10 your cams. OR Get the Weasy2K cams from Colt Cams in Canada. They still have the grind profiles.......
And everything on the motor was balanced--harmonic balancer all the way to the pressure plate--everything!! At 3000 rpm it is smooth--really smooth.
So here is my take--if you want a quality motor built ($4K) that is both smooth and reliable--let me know and i will give you the info for a builder i know.
If you want power now--get a SC--if you want a BAD BUTT setup, do the motor stuffs, along with the SC and Computer upgrades....
