Ya' know what's funny though... we each have stuff that the other doesn't. Let's scrap our trucks and combine them into one!

(btw, my Energy Systems greasable swaybar bushings showed up today! I gotta find a space to put those on. Hmmm.)

Think we can convince Kevin to let us have another wrenchathon? We could push our luck and try my apt. space if you're in a crunch!

Well, the problem now is that it's randomly wet and cold so it's a crapshoot to try to schedule something.

I may try to finagle a local garage into letting me rent some time in one of their bays. They haven't been too busy lately, and I only need a couple of hours tops to do the bushings.

Of course, if I got off my backside I could probably re-arrange our rented garage space that we're using for storage and get enough room to pull the truck in. But it's on a main drag through the complex... argh.

Maybe a paved parking lot at one of the local office buildings. dang this sucks.

Tell me about it! I've searched around in the past for a DIY garage, there was one that existed in Seattle about 20 years ago, but that doesn't really help us out much. Its my main motivation for wanting to get a house at some point. I could have the official 4ROC garage...

I've seen a couple of "new" folks on this thread, so I wanted to point out that when we're talking about "tuning" or mention the "SMT-5", we're talking about this:

I'd love to (and will!) but at the moment the truck is "at the place" doing "the new mod" that "I'm incredibly excited about"!

(I'm SUCH a tease!)
What's behind door #3? Could it be a SUPERCHARGER!???

Nope, not an S/C (I really don't want to fight with the fuel mods), but...

HEADERS!
(click the pic for my online babble and more pics)

Now, I can say that I'm happy, but the shop screwed up and I'll be going back. The info is on the page. "argh"

Mark,

That doesn't look right to me, and I might hazard a guess that they didn't want to spend the extra time to do it right and bend the pipe up and over. You're going to lose the clearance you gained from the lift with that pipe under there, and a good wack from a rock will pinch that pipe right off. Just my .02's...

Also, they may not have looked real close to remember where the original pipe ran, and figured it crossed underneath.

I just heard from My Portland Connection that it's okay:
The TRD headers are the ones that have the crossover pipe that goes over the transmission. All other headers with the exception of the JBA headers made for the TACO's go underneath the engine
I agree about the clearance (Clarence!) and I'll have to take another look in the daylight.

Yummy!

Headers should be a great addition to your truck, Mark. (bumper envy, hodd scoop envy, arrgghhh!)

I think some custom skid plates are in your future...

I'm just thinking as I type here, but I wonder if there are some indirect added benefits of the headers by getting the X-over pipe away from the firewall and under the tranny, in terms of getting some heat out of the engine bay. Any thoughts?

How mean does it sound now?

Okay, so at least it wasn't a mistake on the installer's parts. Have you noticed any increase in performance? C'mon man, spill the beans, we all need our yotafix, and we need it now!

:wtf:

Well, I'm kinda' holding off on talking about performance for right now. I want to get this exhaust piping issue resolved first to really pass judgment. I'm going to pester him today and see if he'll do it while I wait.

I'll also need to dial-in the SMT against the headers. All the work that Dr. Z did last weekend has to be tweaked.

But, "can you feel a difference?"... HECK YEAH!

As for the exhaust tone... I'm MUCH happier than I was with the 3" tail pipe. It's much quieter in the cab, yet still has a nice beefy sound. I used to have a horrible resonance at around 1600 RPM, and then again up higher. It was bad enough that it was simply hard to talk since the sound was bouncing off the driver's side glass and right into my left ear.

Anyway... More words on performance later - I'm off to bug the shop. Wish me luck!

*grumble grumble* Why do I even bother? J/K I knew you were adding the headers this week and that you would have to adjust the SMT. Call me when you're ready to do that.

Oh now Z... you grumble about so much!

So... I'm back from running around for the last couple of hours, and before that, I got my exhaust fixed.

So... peformance update!

*** WOW ***

I am REALLY happy with the performance of my truck now. The low-end torque is back, there's power up top, it sounds good, it's no where near as loud in the cab (it's still louder than yours though G).

I have to do some tuning with the SMT, but I'll let it settle in as it sits for a bit. Dr. Z's also asked me to try running with the FPR mod again, and I'll do that as well.

Overall, the truck feels right now. You can practically hear it thanking you for letting it breath!
