Big Tundra brakes on 3rd Gen 4runner
#201
Can't wait to do this to my '99. It pulls to the left like crazy every time I brake. I've had the alignment done by a very good shop, and they did find it off slightly, but the problem persists (only when braking). I've had the rig for over 30k, but there's no telling the last time it had the brakes done. Even though I don't usually tow with it, and it's 4x2 so no offroading, I would still like to have brakes that work.

Big Brake Upgrade Caliper Color
I used the VHT Cleaner and then used the VHT paint for brakes.
They had several colors at Autozone and I decided to go with the blue.
Used the hot weather we had here last week to paint them and let them bake in sun for a couple of days.
Paid only $8 for the cleaner and paint so I can't complain.
So far one of the best upgrades so far and I have done a lot to my 4Runner.
TRD SC, IPT Transmission Valve Body w/Amsoil ATF, Complete Dynamat (Top to Bottom), etc....
If you're going to pull a Cargo Trailer, Waverunners or a Big Boat this is a must.
Only wish I would of done it sooner.
Now it I could only get a disk setup for my rear brakes
Pedal Travel with the new brakes is about the same as before.
I found that Lexus uses the same calipers on the Lexus GX470 which weighs in at 6000lbs.

If one or more pistons in your calipers is seized (rusted) or locked your braking power on that side will decrease causing your rig to pull to the opposite side where your braking is better.
Usually happens when water (especially salt water) gets in behind the piston seals.
Had a caliper freeze up because of a rusted piston in Alaska when I was stationed there with the Navy.

That's good to know. I'll inspect them when I get a chance. I live in Texas though, and the 4Runner has too it's whole life, so it probably hasn't seen much salt. Lubbock roads are notorious for getting flooded in the slightest bit of rain however.

In case anyone was wondering
The 13WH caliper is used with the larger diameter rotor found on the 4th Gen 4Runner Sport Edition (SE) which comes with 17" wheels. This rotor is larger than the 12.5" rotor used with the 13WL, 13WG, 13SE and stock 3rd Gen 4Runner calipers.

Yes. It just has longer ears to accommodate the larger diameter rotor. As someone mentioned, prado folks do a bit of grinding to make them fit with 16" wheels. They are intended for 17" ones so I don't know about figment with 3rd gen 16"

You know--something i have been thinking about when it comes to this upgrade........
Why not just get a kick-butt set of rotors and pads--Like premuim EBC's or something? Bout the same price yet there would be less sprung weight??
Just a thought

I tried powerslots. Since they were just as thin, they warped too. The thicker tundra ones just seemed to stand up to heavy use. Pay enough for the right oem size brand and it might work too. Maybe brembo. I have ebc red stuff pads on my is350 and they are good stuff.

Oops I stand corrected. The gx does come with the 13wh calipers so gx parts would offer an upgrade to 3rd and 4th gen 4runners, fix and taco. Gx has the h not the g, confusing.

I get to resurrect a thread.
I did my replaced my brakes yesterday with the 231mm tundra brakes. What a difference. Took a little longer to get done. I had to make a surprise trip to the parts store for a wheel stud. I found out that one was buggered up. The threads were ok but the piece of mind was worth it to me.
Here's a question though. I've got the 6 spoke wheels and had a little rubbing. I wasn't too keen on clearancing my calipers or wheels so I got a 1/4" wheel spacer. Can anyone else share their experience or thoughts on this? I think that the lug nuts still have enough purchase on the studs but I really don't want my wheels falling off. Thanks.

Any advantage to powder coating brake calibers?
I'm planning on upgrading the front brake rotors in my 97 Four Runner to the Tundra model and I've read a few threads where the front calibers were powder-coated prior to installation. While it might look nice, wouldn't this inhibit heat dissipation? Thanks

Painting vs Powder Coating
Unless your going to be driving through salt water daily or live near the ocean I don't think the powder coating would make a big difference.
I'm sure there are Powder Coating Materials that dissipate heat well but Autozone carries the cleaner and the paint for $15 or less and you can be done in a couple of hours.
Since I bought 2 cans of paint I even pulled off my drums and painted them to match.
I sprayed mine with several coats and a couple of years later they still look great, other than a little dirt.
One of the best upgrades I've done. No more shimmy, shake or squealing.
