Best 4runner year?

Hi all,

I'm a newbie when it comes to 4runners. But I'm looking into getting one for a DD as well as some off-roading. (My finance can't drive the stick in my 40!)

Can you guys help with some things I should look for? I'm thinking about 1990 and later...but I'm not sure I have good reason for that. Probably IFS, V6 - I've been reading up on HG replacements and some debate about 22RE? Other than that, I'm a novice on years, changes, etc. that I should look for - oh, and hopefully around $6-8,k.

Thanks a bunch!

Cheers,
Kevin

With your pice range around $5-8k you should shoot to go for a 1996 or newer 4runner, a third gen, better v6 than 2nd gen.

1984-1985 are the First Generation 4Runners with solid front axle

1986-1989 are the First Generation 4Runners w/ IFS

1990-1991 was the second generation body style w/ square headlights

1992-1995 had the same body, but integrated headlights

1996-1998 was the third generation body style, and included the 3.4L V6 for the first time

1999-2000 was the third generation body style that got upgrades such as different headlights (all), multimode 4wd, & auto climate control standard on the limiteds. a rear electric locking differential was still an option at this point.

2001-2002 was still the third generation body style, but the rear electric locker was discontinuted and replaced by electronic traction control.

2003+ is the newest body style

I got a 98 because that is the first year the head gaskets were fixed (external & internal leaks) actually 97 1/2 but I went with 98 to be sure.
