Battery leaked, need to take care of some rust...

Yep, too much bouncing around last year on dirt roads...Battery leaked/exploded. I replaced it with a gel-cell last fall. But the rust is bugging me. Anyone have any luck with rust removers that protect the metal after the rust is gone? I've thought about dilute phosphoric acid...Surely there is something better.

we have a battery corrosion cleaner at work, however, its private label firestone insdustrial stuff, so it isnt readliy available to consumers..... we use it all the time then use protectant after it, and have never had firther problems

Then you have to have a MSDS on it. Could you look at it and see what is in it for me?

im sure its the same stuff used in any battery terminal cleaner.. its just private label.. it odes really good at getting the corrosion of and leaving copper and lead all nice and shiny...... not sure there is an msds on it, but it does have a firestone industrial label on it... its packaged like regular stuff you buy at kragens, we jsut get it in bulk....

I've used Navel Gelly on body rust with good luck just not sure how it will interact with battery acid. Found it in the autoparts store. It chemically changes the iron oxide 'rust' into a different compound.
Cheers

There's a product called Extend at Napa, actually there's a couple products on the market now like it, that convert rust to a blackish looking hard substance (hard to sand!) but stops the rust process and seals the metal and is paintable. It's not great for nice surfaces like the exterior body that you'd want to paint - hard to sand smooth. But it's wonderful for those hard to get at places - just spray it on (or in, like inside doors and tailgates) It really works. Check with your local automotive paint supplier.

Anyway, after you've cleaned up well and sprayed the rust converter on it all, spray good old rustoleum on it all and forget it. Good to go.
