Bad smell from the AC
#21
I think this topic went around for awhile on TTORA. I don't think you can search on Delphi like before so here is what some had recommended. They said there is some type of foam that is injected into to outside fresh air intake. It comes in a can like fix a flat with a tube. The foam fills the system and kills the bac teria causing the smell. When the foam dissipates, you turn the heat/AC on full to dry remaining moisture. I don't remember where they had bought the foam though.

I finally had this problem, recently, and I have been using the a/c all summer long. Okay for about two months now. But I just started using the re-cycle option after the a/c has cooled the interior of the truck. This I have only done once or twice now. And last time, going to the beach, my gal started complaining about the smell. Kinda like feet. It went away after about two minuets. But not before I was completely blushing of embarrassment.
I will now kill the re-circulate button a few minuets before my destination. But I think you guys hit it on the head. Just my .02.

Though all of you may be right, it is very possible that the ac clutch is going out. When you first turn it on, if the clutch has trouble completely engaging, it will make a burning type smell (could also be described as feet)...I'd check to make sure the magnetic clutch engages completely right away just to be safe.
Oh, and try 110* and 50% humidity

air conditioning filter
Does your 4runner have an air conditioning filter? I know that my 2003 4runner has an air conditioner filter and its located behind the glove box. Look in the owners manual in the do it your self-maintenance.

can anyone confirm if the 3rd gens have a air conditioner filter?? i'm gettin' some nasty smell too. you'd think that they'd find a better place than the FOOTWELLS to recirculate the air??
i'm wondering if there's any way to get in there and clean it all out. someone posted about getting their condenser replaced. how easy is it to take that off? i dont' think that air freshener is the way to go for me. i'd rather get knee deep in there, and scrub all the mildew off myself.

Well it turns out my AC was on fresh air the whole time and not recirc. I sprayed some of my ozium into the outside vents while running the AC. Voila, problem solved....at least for now.

wow, this is an old thread. haha anyway there's some mildew killing spray that can be used to rid the smell. the mildew smell is just covered up for a while with ozium or whatever, but some auto parts stores have a spray that will kill the mildew in the ac for good. just a fyi
