backspacing wheels

im getting a 3 inch toytec/ome lift so with 295s I will prob need a body lift anyways but I want to make sure I can get as much clearance on everything as possible with the right backspacing.

i had 285's and my buddy has 305's on a wheel with 4.5"BS and had no control arm rubbing issues...yet the backspacing is 'deeper' (so the wheel is closer to the control arm) than the stock wheel. how does a wider rim with a wider tire and a deeper backspacing (LC+305's) have no rubbing issues, while a narrower rim with a narrower tire with a more shallow backspacing (285's+stock wheel) rub? i always thought stock wheels were something like 4.875"?
now correct me if im wrong, but the lower the backspacing #, the more the tires stick out of the fenderwell? (example: crawler steelies are usually 3.75"BS, thus they stick out like a sore thumb)
...or am i just dyslexic?
oh..and to answer your question BMW...16X8, 4.5"BS will work with 285-305 widths. 315's require shaved arms or at least an inch spacer...

I am unclear on this as well...
Isn't the 4.37" stock backspacing supposed to be constant for all wheel widths?
Meaning, if I want to put 20 x 10" wheels in the back, wouldn't I need a 4.37" backspacing? The wheel will probably stick out 2 inches, but on a limited or sport edition, wouldn't that make it flush with the outer fender flare?
Also, I was told that the 4runner has a different center bore or something. That is why even if you find the correct backspacing and lug pattern, it doesn't necessarily mean the wheel will work.

stock isnt 4.375...
but yeah, a 4.5ish backspacing seems to be the magic number
just got these done, they have about 1/2 inch clearance now

yeah sometimes the center bore on chevy's? is smaller, and doesnt fit over the hub... some people have machined them larger, hand mod'ing may work since it is at the center and wont affect balancing as much

BTW, very nice job on your wheels. Very aggressive looking. I should probably look on your other thread, but what width rim and tire size are you running?

I'm running Toyota 16x8 wheels from a 94 LC, that appear to have 4.4-4.6 BS... others have said 4.5... running 285-75-16 Cooper STT's they appear to have much wider tread than my 285-75-16 yoko geo HT-S's
I don't know of what stock wheel you are referring to as a 16x8 with 4.75... my stock was a 16x7 with oh say 4.75-5"

Kinda puny... Don't get me wrong, it's a ton of fun spinning out every time I get on the gas... I'd just like to hook up sometime in first gear!
Anyone know of some lightweight wider wheels? Stock 5 spokes weigh 22.5lbs. Looking to get 18 to 20" wheels with a 10" width out back, staggered with 8.5"s out front, in the same weight or lower. So far I found that iforged 3 piece wheels weigh in at 25lbs in their 20 x 9" application. Not bad, but my goodness are they expensive...

Geez people don't make me take off my rim and measure the BS on it...
Easy way to measure BS is take a piece of metal, cut it so it's the size of the out lip of the rim, and then set it on there. That way we don't have to worry about the 4.75-5" dimension, we can have something exact.

The 4.5" BS for LC wheels is correct, but I'm not 100% sure about the Runner wheels being 4.75-5". Most people think stock 16X7" wheels are 4.375. I've never taken my wheels off to measure, so I'm just taking their word for it. Here's one of the threads I got my info from...

...so now, i just got back from the garage to measure my spare since i've got no stock alloys left...and guess what? its almost 5"... and yes the spare steelie is the same measurements as the stocker alloy...

thats all misinformation. it IS actually somewhere between 4.75-5" of backspacing. if you look at the image i posted above, you'll see why. theres no way a wheel with 4.375 (less) backspacing (stock) can stick out less than a wheel with 4.5 (more) backspacing (LC). the lower the backspacing#, the more the wheels stick out. before, i never took my wheels off to measure either, but i thought it was more than 4.5". then people started saying its 4.375...so i took their word for it too...

Blake ran that setup on his 4Runner for a while before trading them with Ric. Ric's running either a 285 or larger tire with the TRD rims.
You might be right on the amount of backspacing...I just can't remember.
