backspacing?

Can someone explain backspacing to me or show me a thread that explains it clearly. ive searched but cant find good ones.

Good page, about the same information I hae on my page. Note that they are incorrect in their backspacing to offset calculation, the forgot to account for the thickness of the lip of the rim, which is typically around 1/2" / 12mm.
