My 2001 FSM shows the torque for the pan bolts to be 65 INCH-lbs, take note that is INCH- lbs not foot-lbs. I had to buy a small torque wrench just for inch-lbs.

The same FSM shows the filter bolts to be 7 ft-lbs or 84 inch- lbs

 

Also...where do you all get Mobil 1 or Redline ATF??

 

I get Mobil 1 ATF at Autozone or O'reillys (cheaper than AZ).

 

M1 can be found at walmart also in most locations.. if you can find amsoil (check with mom and pop type auto stores) go with it.. amsoil is pretty top notch also.


goat, how do you get the left over residue off of the tranny pan and where it attaches to the tranny? i am assuming sand paper or dremel tool?

nope, quarts only.. expensive huh? lol its a bitch but it really should be done.. if you do the flush you will never have to do one again bc from there on after you can do very simple drain and fills every 15-20k miles with syn dexIII..

 

So I can get a case of amsoil atf....which is 12 quarts for around 115 bucks and then it's 9 bucks a quart after that. so that'd be around 142 for 15 quarts. Is that a good deal. How much is the Mobil 1 ATF at wally world per quart?

 

at walmart its around 6.50 and up if i am not mistaken but a lot of times they may not have the amount you want. so you will have to buy what they have and wait for another truck to come in and buy it up again.. its your call.. i do know that amsoil is better than M1 but M1 is a pretty good syn for dexIII atf.. again its your call... lucky me i have a mom and pop auto store around my place so i can drop in and get what i want without paying shipping. thats why i went with amsoil.. BUT if i didnt have that i would deff use M1

 

Goat a few simple questions for ya while we are on this subject

what do you clean the pan sealant residue off with?

after putting the sealant on the pan or where the pan goes and screw everything in, how long do you have to wait for the sealant to set up before you add atf via the dipstick hole?

 

I've never seen the Mobil 1 ATF in my local Walmart, and I've only seen it in quart sizes. Amsoil sells ATF in large sizes, I think you can even get a 55 gal drum hehe.

Cleaning up the old FIPG is time comsuming. I use a paint scraper to get the big stuff and those 3M buff pads (by hand) after that. Make sure you get it completely clean but don't scratch the surfaces, the aluminum tranny surface is of course softer and easier to scratch than the steel pan.

Make sure to keep dirt out of the tranny while the pan is off, ie like don't leave the pan off outside with the wind blowing up a dust storm. Things as small as lint from a rag can cause problems with the solenoids so keep it clean.

It would be good to let it sit overnight before filling it back up with ATF, but I don't think its required.

 

I guess I don't recommend it now based on what Dale just said but I let my FIPG set for about 2hrs before I filled it up and took it for a drive. No problems so far.

 

thanks guys... i may try to tackle this one day before i do a total flush.. i guess i could do the flush without replacing the filter but sometime down the road it will need to be replaced due to shaving build up... i wonder why toyota decided not to ever replace it? hell my local dealers wont even tough it. they wont drop the pan unless asked to. they just drain and fill, oh they will check the flow rate or something like that for the tranny

 

Also...how many quarts does the 1999 Toyota Tacoma automatic tranny hold? This is going to cost a wee bit more than I initially expected and I don't want to spend more money that I have to. I'd like to get the right amount of ATF so that I don't go too far overbudget.

it will hold between 12-16qts. so get 16 just in case.. remember what you dont use, you can always use again in a future drain and fill..

Great thread. I am reasonably sure that my truck has never had a drain and flush and it has 140K on it. I am leery about having a flush done on it but doing a drain and fill with a filter replacement seems feasible. Do you think that I would be ok having it flushed with this many miles on it?

The transmission really shifts good so I am not worried about it but it is on the back of my mind, you know?

The other thing I was thinking was doing the valve body upgrade that is highlighted in the "Speedy's Supercharger" thread. I don't have a blower but I would think that clearing up the slop in the transmission couldn't hurt it in terms of reliability. Any thoughts on this for a normally aspirated truck?

 

it wont hurt to flush, only when the fluid is burnt (brown) or has tiny flakes in it.. other than that do it.. use a good synthetic that way it will last longer (the atf i mean) esp if it is dexIII.. i am going to change the screen out just once or unless i keep mine past 200k miles

So do I go to the dealership to get this Toyota T-IV fluid? It sounds like the way to go for sure.

It also states in that thread that you should not "powerflush" the fluid if it's been in your vehicle for more than 60k miles.

Does that mean I should leave my ATF alone? I don't think so, but I'm just asking to be sure.

EDIT TO ADD: Nevermind about the powerflush....I'll only be doing a drain of all the ATF and a refill of new ATF so I'm in the clear. There will be no "powerflushing" going on in my case.

 

Also...if this T-IV fluid is what I should run in my truck and my ATF has never been completely drained and filled to my knowledge does that mean I should just change the filter out and refill the little amount of ATF that comes out of the pan?

One would think that the fluid in my tranny would already be T-IV right? I bought the yota used with 80K miles on it from the dealership, I doubt it would have different fluid in it.

What do you all think?
