Audiophiles: speaker install question...
Ok, so I have a '93 EX cab and I currently have a Premier DEH-P430 head unit, two 3.5" tweaters in the front and two 6x9"s in boxes in the back seat. I was hoping to add an amp and sub this year and to save space I was thinking of mounting the 6x9s in the sides of the ex-cab where the little poskets are.
I realize that if I just toss them in there that the plastic and tin is going to rattle and sound like ˟˟˟˟˟ so I was wondering how I should go about building a solid box into the wall. Any advise on construction, materials, air space requirements for sound quality?

I might get shot down for this one but just from my past experience a solid box built for 6x9's isn't really going to improve your sound quality that much for the trouble youll probably have to go through. If you can come up with a way to mount the speakers "solid" enough so they dont rattle and vibrate that would porbably get you what you want.

Get some plywood and use the existing hole covers as templates and cut yourself a mounting board. Cover the board with some vinyl to match the interior of your truck. You can install it by using drywall screws to screw it into the plastic. That's how I did my 6x9's. Actually, the screws that hold the 6x9's to the board are the screws that hold the board to the siding. If you mount it the right way, it can be done. It will still rattle when turned up but a little dynamat on the inside of the pocket and a foam baffle would probably help that.

Here is member mytruck's (Jim) install in a rig similar to yours.

Note where the amp is, and he also has an extra fan with a louver he made to supply air to the amp.
As for speakers, he has 6.5" components by MB Quart with new doors made out of MDF to replace the plastic sides back there.

There is no sub added to this setup yet, but it sounds great.
I have heard the system as I took these pictures, and it sounds great for not having a sub woofer yet.
The 4" dash speakers are run from the decks power I think.

I am doing this more as a space improvement rather then a sound improvement so I don't expect it to sound a lot better, only to not make it sound worse.
It has bee a while since i had to tear that pannel apart So I can't remeber the internals that well but was originally thinking along the lines of MDF w/ maybe some Mono foam around it for support/ sound deadening. Looks like I don't have to get that fancy to get it done...
