Keeping the stock tranny involves issues with computers and valvebodies. The bellhousings are indeed different.

The stock 95 auto tranny and t-case share fluid. Disconnecting it and trying to add one to the F series trannies sounds like a bad way to patch a simple problem.

Sell the stock auto, get the engine and tranny from the same rig. One adaptor and you have a gear drive, beefy t-case. Add the MC07 and another case and you will be styling.

Give me a month.

Resurrected....

Has anyone entertained swapping in a 3rd Gen auto into a 2nd Gen auto equipped rig? Is the main problem controlling the tranny (computer wise)? Are there any aftermarket tranny controllers that can be piggybacked?

The reason I'd like to know is I have two top shift cases I need out of my garage (and into my rig)...

Is that the one where they had to machine stuff on the tranny etc? If it is, I remembered seeing that one. I was hoping to find a bolt in solution with possibly some aftermarket piggy back control. I need to dig up that article and read it again...

Thanks Steve.

Have you looked at these guys?

I know it's over what you wanted to pay,but might be worth looking into if you want to avoid all the swapping stuff.

Not sure. I vaguely remember that article, but I'm not sure if it's the same.

I have seen those guys site before and I'm always amazed at the claims and prices. I wouldn't mind paying that kind of money if I had some idea of their reputation. Has anyone out there got one of their engines? I'd love to have that 190 or 255 HP one. I guess the racing engine would be less reliable huh?

I have a 3.4 with a dual ultimate auto.

There is no good reason to keep the stock tranny other than theorhetical cost savings. Going with the new tranny allows for duals, has gears more suited to the engine and the powerband and gets you a newer and presumably better shape tranny.

The stock 3.0 auto will bolt to the 3.4 The size and number of valve bodies and their resultant control is the issue in one tranny versus the other.

The first thing I'd do is call Mike here http://www.offroadsolutions.com/meetthestaff.htm. But get out your check book, last time I ask it was going to be at least $8000 for him to do it. You can buy a lot of manual hubs for that.

Full conversion kit for automatic ... $2195

Finding someone on Yotatech.com to help with the swap ... Priceless

I just went through this whole thing as well. I decided to stay with the 3.0 for my own reasons, but, Offroad solutions may have the harness ready for the A340H transmission at this time. When i was doing it it was not yet finished. I had the 3.4 and all needed components for roughly 2000 with 15 thousand kilometers on it. Having no harness would mean that i would have to wire the trans up by hand. Not doable in my present situation. You don't need a body lift to do the swap, it will bolt right up to the auto trans it is only the wiring harness to the transmission that is any different. Dave Gio (he posts on this board and BC4x4.com) has done this swap and has wired the harness by himself. How difficult it was i couldn't say but there is proof it can be done. Good luck if you do it, and let us know.

my cousin and I have done the 3.4 swap into 2 1990 4runners...auto 4WD.

we did our own wiring.
used the original auto tranny and transfer case. we just completely rebuilt the tranny and t-case. and also modified the valve body and some internal parts to allow the transmission to shift better and handle the power from the 3.4, not to mention the power of the s/c also.

also made a custom part to allow the speed sensor to work correctly.
