Anyone put a 3.0 in a 22R or 22RE???
What engine mounts should I use? Can I bolt the engine to my 2wd 5spd with a different bellhousing? SHould I swap in my auto? I know the 1st gen body style came with the 3.0 one year, could I use those body mounts in my '85 pup and bolt the sucker in?

I assume you mean 3.4 not 3.0
Well here's the thing.... I have a 4Runner apparently worth DIDDLY on the open market, it's way too much $$ for me now that I am starting school pretty soon and living on my own. I have a pickup with a craptastic 22R that I am convinced is not going to make it through 2004. Swapping in the 3.0 is THE single cheapest option I have right now. If I sell the 4Runner, I won't get enough to buy a rebuilt 22R and will break even on rebuilding the 22R I have right now. If I want to add a weber carb to the equation, I'm $200-300 in the hole. On the other hand, I can swap over the 3.0 with the only costs being: exhaust system ($100, have muffler already), engine mounts (might not even need these), fluid change, engine "check up" (compression & leakdown to check for imminent HG failure) and lots of my time & elbowgrease (which I have more of than $$ these days) so in the end I'll have a working, cheap, reliable truck for like 350 to 400 bones.

don't forget that you'd also need wiring and the computer and everything. the 3.0 is EFI, so it complicates things
personally, i'd rather even have a GM motor over one of those 3.0s. a 2.7 would be a far better bet...usually quite a bit cheaper than a 3.4 and more power than the 3.0

well, imho it's not worth the effort to swap to a 3.0. it doesn't have much more power or torque than a 22r, and they've proven to be not a whole lot better in general
i'd just rebuild the 22r(though it's still comparatively young) and put a weber on it, or convert to a 22RE
but hey, i'm just rambling, do what you want, and remember to post pics

22R - 98 hp 115 tq
3.0 - 150hp 180 tq
That's a pretty fair difference imho, it takes a fairly modified 22R to reach those power levels, probably without reaching 180tq at all. The other advantage is I can do a little work to the 3.0 while it's out of the truck (bump up timing, do the cold start enrichment mod, make some real ram-air, and possibly headers if they help (heard it go both ways) all in all, I think I'm sticking with my trusty 3.slow (which has required nothing but general maintainence) for a while longer. I just want to get an idea of how to put it in. I have it MOSTLY figured out. I guess I won't really know until I yank both the engines

Off topic a little: Your "new" '85 is 2wd, right? I'm just curious, because I didn't think the longbed Xcabs came out until '86 or '87. Just curious and I could be way off. I do know that 4wd longbed Xcabs never existed.

Ya, he's got a 2wd extracab longbed (like me).
FWIW, the 3.0 in a 2wd truck is plenty powerful.
My sister has me Dad's "old" truck - 1994 2wd extracab - and with stock size tires it can be hard not to spin the tires sometimes.
For your question Los Gatos, I'd say go ahead. The only thing you're spending is your time basically.
You should be able to use the motor mounts from the runner, but double check that with the truck frame.
For the tranny, swap it out too. I don't think there is an adapter from the v6 to a 4cyl tranny. You'll probably have to swap part of the driveshaft too (different connections to the tranny).
Then you'll have a 2wd with low range
Hope this helps,
Todd

Well I decided on the 3.slow, it was beautiful today so I got several things done... tore emissions equipment out (will reuse stuff from 3vze), tore all vacuum lines out, disconnected everything from the engine I could get to today. Tomorrow I will start removal of engine. Should be fun! I will probably have a 22R for sale pretty soon... I will probably put it in the local paper for $300 or 400 along with the trans and so forth.

<--- see left... The 3.0 can do plenty fine.. it has plenty of power... and a 2nd gen 4 runner would be way ĊĊĊĊing (err freaking) cooler for a offroad vehicle anyways... that's what I want to do, you could be the first to have a dedicated 2nd gen.

Actually there are plenty nice 2nd gens out there. I don't want a piece of that action. I figure I can have the '85 22R ext cab long bed cornered in no time...2nd gen 4Runners have some good competition. Check out Corey's rig, umm well I don't remember any other names, but there are probably 8 or 9 nice offroading 2nd gens out there, lots with lockers and cases and SFAs.

I own a 3 slow and it has power ~145 or 150 HP. Problem: belts, and so many other parts to go wrong. Not convience that the 3 slow is as well engineered as 22RE or 22TRE. Would consider a 2.7 a better bet. A 3.4 Yota engine needs an extra 2 inches of room on top. Lift or hood scoop would take care of that problem. But, there would be so much other crap to deal with.
Crap is ... your money divided by miles you drove it minus how much money you loose later selling it.
I realize you started making the change to the 3 slow but, it's never to late to stop and smell the roses.:alien:
