If you're going to replace the whole engine, you might as well drop in a 3.4L. The 3.0L engine isn't a horrible engine, but it is less reliable and doesn't climb hills so great.

how much would the 3.4 cost me, roughly?

That's probably best discussed with your local auto wrecker. I remember that orientengine.com was quite popular to rebuild yota engines, but I see that they don't sell the 3.4s anymore (probably ran out).

It's a hard engine to find -- namely because they're all still on the road.
