Another MAF/P0171 Thread

Ok, I have a P0171 CEL light with my 1997 Toyota 4Runner V6

Yes, I have cleaned the MAF sensor with no luck as the code going away
Yes, I do have a new fuel filter on the car (Toyota OEM)
I recently had my car tuned up by my mechanic as well as some other things (he replaced the seal on my rear differential, because it was leaking gear oil)
I have an oil based K&N filter
I have the deck plate mod on my 4Runner.

ok, my question is... what can I do now?

I can buy a new MAF sensor, but Toyota wants 600 dollars plus! (Toyota Part No. 22250-20020), auto zone 220 + 40 core charge. I have been reading about a toyota 100 dollar replacement via the other threads on this board concerning this problem. Does anyone have the part no. for that?

Are there any other possible solutions to this?

and just fyi, this came on about two months ago, and since i deemed it to be not a major mechanical problem, I have still been driving my car to and from school.

Thanks in advance guys

David.

I had the exact same problem and the dealer put on a new MAF for $400 total. $600 doesn't sound right at all.

If you've cleaned it with brake cleaner (electrical contact cleaner won't work for squat so if you used that, they you'll need to do it again!), reset the ECU and it still came back, then get a used one off eBay. That same MAF was used on several different vehicles so you can almost always find one for sale. You might want to ditch the K&N since this is a common issue with those. Also yes, the retail on a new MAF for 96-98 4runners is $568.53 so a $600+ repair bill wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Did it come on at the same time you put on or re-oiled the K&N?

Retail on that is 669.19 plus tax. My local Auto Zone has it for 181.89 plus tax. Try the internet and you'll find it even cheaper.

Why do you think its your MAF? Unless the code is different for a '97, that code is a lean code. I got that after adding my S/C and when I did my fuel mods, I increase my fuel via my piggy back puter. Would a bad MAF trigger that code???

I will clean it with brake cleaner next time I go home, I am currently away for college. I have reset the ECU numerous times and it comes back, about 25 miles or so after reseting it. I just purchased on from eBay, so wish me luck!

Thank you for your post!

No, I have yet to re oil my K&N, but the general consensus on this board is against the K&N, so probably early of next year, when I do my oil change, I will get an AMSOIL air filter with my oil change.

Thank you for your post!

From reading mosts of the posts and threads about the P0171 CEL code, they mainly recommend cleaning out the MAF sensor, which usually solves the problem. I have done everything else, and I've checked that there isn't a leak along the vacuum, so hopefully this will be a cheap (via ebay) solution.

Thank you for your post!
