Another Gear Question
I have 305/70 on my 3rd gen and need to regear when I install a Detroit limited slip in the front. What gear should size should I choose to regain performance off road and on road?

i hate to hijack your thread, so im gonna help first before i do it, that way i wont feel as bad.
to get close to stock performance, its probably 4.56. but most will say go ahead and get 4.88 because its more low-end power, better crawl, and a more bang for your buck.
hijack on - how did you get the 305s to fit. i saw a pic you had with them on and looked like you removed the front fender. if you prefer to PM or email thats fine. i tried to PM or email you, never got a repsonse.

4.88's should be a no brainer.
Only getting 4.56's would not be worth it IMHO. With those tires, you will actually be running 33's with a real 12.5ish" width. More tire on the ground, more weight all necessitates more gear.

I guess I will go with 4.88 cause I spend the majority of the time in mud and rocks. Now the big question, what manufacturer should i get it from? I am order a limited slip so I can order Guinune Gear and the diff at the same time from 4 wheel parts or some place like that. I destoyed my spiders, and gears in the front diff from shifting from 2lo to 4lo while rolling so I am looking for something strong.
RTdawgs:
I used a hydrolic ram jack, 6inch grinder and removed the liners to kinda fit the big meats. The pic was probobly before the spacers and bl They rubbed something terrible so I ordered 1.5" spacers for the Old Man Emu so I could put the flares back on, but still a little rub, then put a 2 inch body lift but now I have no front diff......go figure.

oh yea, and I think 4.88's are a good choice. I am very please with the performance gains I got when I lowered from 4.10 to 4.88 with my 285's.

5.29's would be way too low with 33's if you plan to run on the highway. I think that 4.88's would literally be perfect.
Precision is the best.
Yukon and US Gear are top notch.
Genuine Gear is genuine crap as the story goes.
Good set-up and mesh makes a difference as well.

I'll second the 4.88's. My 4.88's seemed a little too low (high?) for my stock 31's and even my 32's. The 33's are better on the highway now - lower revs...

32.811" to be exact (assuming they are on a 16" wheel)
305/25.4 = 12.008" (treadwidth)
12.008" x .7 (70 AR) x 2 (2 sidewalls in ht) + rim dia.
8.405"+8.405"+16"=32.811
There is always some variance, but that's the formula...
EDIT: 305/75R16 are 34" tall...

I have not driven my runner in a couple of days because of the burned out diff so I need to order those gears tomarrow. So while the diff is out I am installing new wheel bearings, and the body lift, clean and rebuild the winch and am going to repaint the TJM.
BFG says they are 33.1 BFG MT Specs Your tires sould fit without trimming if you cranked the SAWs to a full 3 inch lift
I have a mile marker winch but I installed a rock stomper plasma line with a spider trax fair lead to help reduce weight but it still rubbed :pat:
