alloy rim restoration?
#22
I've used, believe it or not, Comet and Bar Keepers Friend with a scrubber type pad on the end of a drill, and a little water.
After the initial cleaning, I'd do touch up cleaning with a Brillo pad and a little elbow grease.

As somebody who has spent the *painful* time to strip/clean/polish a set of Tacoma alloys, I would highly recommend bead blasting them to get ALL of the nooks and crannys clean, especially those cast surfaces of the rim that have a rough texture.
Then you can have fun polishing them every week to keep them looking nice (if you don't re clear-coat them)....
The "shiny rim" novelty wore off pretty quick for me once I realized the level of upkeep they required , so I eventually located a great powder coater that was nice enough to do them on the cheaps for me (throw them in with another batch at the same time). I did them black and I haven't looked back since. All you have to do is clean them when you wash your truck and off you go, pretty good deal...

A day with a few small wire brushes and a shade tree fixed the horrible rims.
the clear coat all flaked off like potato chips and the soft corrosion brushed away pretty smooth with brass brushes, a few places needed a hard steel brush...
I figured I would paint the front hubs too.
and the spare.
not bad for $5 a can rim paint. (graphite gray, advanced auto)
there is a few flecks and imperfections here and there but they are uniformly clean.

WOW! Holy white walls!
I found when I stripped mine with aircraft stripper that the recessed areas had silver paint on them. I don't recall if the other one I had done previously had the silver paint or not. Maybe the painting was done to certain years?
The rims look good. That was one of the colors I was considering for mine.

Alright, my rims on the 83 supra.....
First, I got all the tires taken off them, easier to work with.
I then scuffed the paint with 80grit sandpaper to....
Use a nylon brush and a chemical paint stripper to get as much of the paint off as I could.
I took them home again and sanded down the leftover paint to make them smooth.
I took my rims to work and cleaned them in the parts washing bin to get all the grease and oil off the backs of them to sand them down a little bit.
Then, after the were sanded to my standards, I polished the parts that I wasn't planning on painting. It helped with the masking tape, I'll explain later.
So a week later I get around to having all my rims masked off and start shooting the spray bombs at them.
I removed the masking tape and the glue stuck to the metal that I already polished. Polish them some more and all the tape is off, and the rims look great for the amount of time and effort I put into them.
I'll post pics whenever I find the digi cam. I have the before shots but no afters....

oh the whitewalls... I know... yuck. the 2 front tires were inspectable off the parts truck so I used those. all the tires are dryrot and cracked to much for my comfort so when I can, new tires all around. (soon)
one step at a a time.

Niiicccce rim work there Allyia!!
Your choice of "graphite grey" looks way better than the military black that soooo many have done to their rigs (sorry guys, but you'll have to admit that it's the truth), it's good to see something different.
Keep up the good work, you've made an impression already.
