final decision
I am not going to buy the sc until something more reliable comes out. I have the funds but really it seems it would be a headache. I am going to work on the deckplate mod next weekend and probably do a cat-back exhaust kind of mod.
I have even read posts here that some people even with fuel upgrades still have problems, for example barrafp. there are too many variables that would impact the performance and to be able to control anything is impossible.
I am going to keep working on general maitainance on the truck, I have already learn a bit of mechanics by being on this forum and buying the repair manual, I have done the engine oil (with the Auto-rx treatment, currently 500 miles cleaning phase), changed the fuel filter, put a k&n filter on the oem box and cleaned the intake. I am going to put nue tranny synthetic atf from amsoil, as well as on differencial. grease driveshafts, purge brake lines, change to brembo discs, add tranny cooler...etc
Difenitely the SC could be a head ache, especially with uncontrollable variables such as climate changes, or costly mods which do not guarantee tunning.

I got good news though I am pretty close to close a deal on a S/C with only 10k miles on the engine for hopefully less than $1,000 so if I get this deal closed I would be more inclined to get the fuel mods and then the whole package would end up cost me around $1900. Lets see what happens.
Now is there anything I should worry when getting a used S/C? I have heard you can send it to Manguson for maintainance pretty inexpensive. I i get it that would be the first thing I would do to make sure it is in OK condition, although I would not think 10k are a lot on it. Also the current owner is using the regular pulley not the smaller one.
what do you guys think???

Hey welcome to the board. I've been running the s/c since about 30k. I installed the URD kit at 90k. AWSOME kit and really helped out everywhere.Very happy with both upgrades.I did have some pinging but it only seemed when I would lug it.I also had a smaller pulley and cone air filter. So I would just try not to lug it and down shift more.5sp helps out on that note.I tried about everything to fix the slight ping bigger fuel pump,boost-a-pump.The URD kit was the correct fix.I'm at 104k now and have some oil coming from the front nose cone.I talked to a guy at Magnuson to get a new nose cone @ $310 and found that it is actually cheaper if I just send him my s/c for an over haul for $250. I had talked to him a while ago so the prices may have changed alittle. I plan to send mine to them in the spring.
His name was Tony 805-642-8833 ext 223 very helpful. Good luck. I think either way you will be happy.

Hello,
I also tow a wakeboard boat (tige 21V) all over the NW and have the S/C. I have only a slight amount of ping while towing up a hill in the low rpm range. Once I down shift though it goes away. Anyways, another mod that you are going to want to get if you tow alot is the transmission valve body upgrade (if you have an auto). The shifts between 1st and second when towing a ~5000 lb boat take veerry long on the stock valve body and made me cringe every time.

like ColImport i was also wondering if my only option is to send the valve body to Level 10 like Gadget suggests or if i could do this locally. what exactly is being upgraded/changed so i could talk to a local tranny shop and know what to ask for

I got mine from IPT (import performance transmission) in new jersy? I think. Cost was around $700 with shipping and everything. The process is - take out the valve body - pack very well and ship to IPT - they modify it and send it back - reinstall valve body. I was able to do the removal and install my self which saved me some $$. It is a very easy process that I figured out how to do from a write up in the tech section. The only downside to the procedure is that you are without your truck for at least a week.
Do you need it without the S/C? If you are towing alot, especially if it is a heavier v drive wakeboard boat, it would probably be a good idea to lengthen the life of your tranny. It is kind of expensive but I justified it by the fact that it might save me from a premature, $2500 trans rebuild.
If you do get it done, I recommend IPT. The owner there, john i think, was very helpful and anwsered all the questions I had and made my truck shift just like I was hoping for and took away any lag inbetween gears. Even though I didn't do it in this order, in retrospect I probably should have got the valvebody done first and then put on the S/C but the lure of the add ponies was too much. Sorry for the long post but hope it helps.

Regarding the Valve Body Upgrade (and actually, John from IPT)... Check out this thread... I asked a pretty specific question and John answered it very well:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/whats-valve-body-upgrade-27512/
John's on the board here as "Transdude". He seems like a great guy. If you dig around a bit on here, the last year has seen a shift from people using Level 10 and moving to IPT.
ColImport;
I HIGHLY respect you for making a decision, but please don't think that the S/C is unmanageable. It can be wrangled, and many folks here are living proof of that. But, what's generally accepted is that you will _not_ be able to get the S/C under control with _just_ the expense of the S/C itself. You'll need some extras. In my case, that was about $300 for the SMT piggy-back. Other folks have spent more - and less.
Also, I wouldn't put too much faith into thinking that Toyota/TRD will create "something more reliable". It was only recently that TRD came out with the 7th injector, yet the problems that it "fixes" had been known for many years. I would bet that TRD thinks they're done.
That said, the development costs for a 3rd party would be HUGE to do an S/C. There are other options, but they're at least twice (three times?) the cost of the base TRD setup.
Good luck with your other mods!

guys do you know of a good write up on cleaning the mesh filter on the 2wd 4runner's transmission?
Midiwall,
I think you are right. I think the sc issue applies different depending on what each individual is expecting to get out of it. For me my Runner is my daily commute vehicle as well as my leisure car for towing my boat and going on trips to mountains and stuff. But mainly it gets me from work to home. So if I decide to get into the SC mode and have complications I can not really afford not having a vehicle readily available to get me back and forth from work. I think if I had an extra vehicle I would play around with my truck but right I this point I thik I can do the other mods and not run into major complications.
But believe me, the Sc is tempting but also I think it needs objective reasoning for someone and really evaluate their individual set of needs to make a decision on it rather than jumping on it by impulse,.

JFG,
HI…
I own a 1998 Supercharged SR5 5speed and I LOVE it. I have 128K miles (117K Supercharged) and have experienced no major trouble.
I tow a 19' powerboat and a Haulmark 16' enclosed motorcycle trailer AND I drag race the truck occasionally.
For my application, when running the stock pulley, I did not have any fuel delivery problems at all. You can check out the details of my testing at http://n8rws.com . It does seem that my application may be the exception as most folks report severe fuel delivery concerns with the TRD Supercharger.
Honestly speaking, you probably don't really need the supercharger to meet your goals but it sure is a hell of a lot of fun with one.
Good luck,
