Did you order the little dabber bottle that you'll drain out? I understand now.
I got a quart since I have a bunch of stuff I want to paint. I've been amassing parts to paint so I can take my time prepping and painting them and then I'll just switch them out. I'm painting my door handles, the rear tailgate surround, the backs of the side mirrors among other things... I've got a de-chroming thing going on...

OK Im having problems getting the paint to stick to the rings. I've cleaned the metal, primed, and then painted with a wheel paint (Polyurethane resin) plus i baked them in a make shift oven(metal box with a hole cut in the lid so the nozzel of a heat gun can fit in) around 170-180° for 2hrs. I let the metal cool overnite. It looks really nice and feels tough. I pushed my finger nail in to it with no marks. But when i bumped the 2 rings together by accident and the paint chipped real easy. Cebby i think thats what happened to your rings. Seems like paint is not bonding with the aluminum. Now im not sure what to do other then powder coating.

I'm going to paint mine today with high-temp engine enamel and bake them for a few hours, well see how it turns out. I have also had good luck using epoxy paint on metal items that are out in the elements all the time. I paint some shocks with it (epoxy) and it’s very chip resistant. I bought it at Lowes btw and it’s called appliance epoxy.

I did a search online(google is my friend) and it seems that getting paint to stick to aluminum is difficult cause it wont bond with it very well. Called my local part store and asked them about painting aluminum they said to get ALUMIPREP 33 (http://www.buyhstna.com/docs/234449.pdf ) which cleans the metal and ALODINE 1201 ( http://www.buyhstna.com/docs/235110.pdf )which which preps the metal for painting. Each 1 quart bottle cost around $12 each. So my task continues on getting the hubs ready for install hope i get it done be it snows

Which junk yard did you go too? All Foreign Auto? Sounds like you were at a place where you could walk around the vehicles like a pick-a-part they have in Cali but I haven't found one like that here. I need a set of hubs too.

Carefull with the alodine!!!! It is quite toxic. We use a lot of it here at Boeing.
Also don't mix any alodine with any solvents = FIRE
This includes the used rags.

hey, sorry to steal...
but I have a 2000 Runner and I have be considering changing to manual hubs, but most people on this board talk trash about Warn hubs. Will a '86 (or whatever) to '95 Aisin hub if I buy a kit to change to manual without the warn hubs? thanks

Changing a 96+ to manual hubs is a pricey option (around $1000 I think). The only "kit" is by ORS (Off Road Solutions) or you can source it with Taco parts like Steve S. Either way, it is expensive and involved to do. It's not just bolting on hubs like for us 1st/2nd gen guys.

Thanks Mike,
I should have known you would have a pic. I didn't realize that the raised portion of the dial was that suttle. I was thinking the entire dial was raised up as compared to the edge of outer trim ring but it is flush at the edge and raised at the center bar only. That may be what I have at home with the 30 spline gears but I think the dial is flush all the way across.
