Advice needed on finding a used Taco

My son is looking for a new set of wheels and (thank god) he is considering a Taco- I am trying to talk him into a 2wd X-cab. He is a poor college kid/aspiring musician, and hauls his drums around. Are the current 4 cylinder engines as reliable as my old 22re? I am thinking about a 99 or 2000. Any problems or things to look for would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

I have a 2.7L '98 ext cab, that gets its share of abuse, with 125,000 miles and it still runs great. Was getting around 21-22 mpg with the 28's on it, I am getting closer to 18-19 with the 31's. Still passes inspection with flying colors.
