Acceleration sputtering

Acceleration sputtering
Picked up my rig yesterday, and was driving it and noticed it had a little acceleration lag.
When I first step on it, it seems to sputter out, but once it gets past that...no problems at all.
It also does it in reverse...any ideas?
The dealer said that it needed some new plugs...could that be it? I'm hoping it's either plugs or a tuning issue.
PLS. HELP!

Have you ever done anything with the fuel filter? How many miles do you have? I changed mine out and it helped. Air filter? Ever done plugs and wires? I did all of that and it plus exhaust and my 95 with 93,400 miles on it got a 2nd life.

I just picked the rig up yesterday. It has 125,122 miles on it, not sure about the fuel filter, not sure about the air filter. But one write-up from a local mechanic said that the plugs needed to be replaced and it needed a tune-up. The exhaust on it is stock, but I am about to replace it with a Dynomax Turbo Muffler...dunno when but I don't think that has anything to do with it. I think the plugs are the culpret...if not. I'll post again with an update.
Thx. for the reply!

no no no, I picked it up from the dealer for the first time. I bought the thing on Monday...and its been having an accleration problem...the dealership said that the mechanic down the road that he goes to all the time said that it needed new spark plugs and a tune-up, he showed me the estimate that the dude wrote up. He has some parts to order for me and then he will take back to the guy.
Do you think that new spark plugs could fix the acceleration hesitation? It only happens when first accelerating...after that it's fine, for the most part. One time it acted up in 2nd or 3rd gear. Anyway, could new spark plugs and a tune-up fix the accleration problem?
Thanks for the replies guys, keep em comin'!

Does yours do the exact thing as mine? I hope it fixes it or I'm gonna be p*ssed off. The accleration of Runners are crappy in general, now mine is even worse.
Whats the TPS? I'm new to Runners...sorry.

Throttle Position Sensor.
Here is a page about the TPS. The symptoms of having a problem with it are down at the bottom of the page.
Mine has been replaced but I still have a hesitation. I only have it after my truck has been driven and sits for a few hours. I need to put it back in the shop and have them figure it out. I have some special circumstances surrounding my hesitation though.
I hope that helps.

I'm having the same thing but my 'hesitation' has progressed to no-power. Yeah.....I can hear you saying, "that's a 3.0L and it inherently doesn't have any power." Well, I mean I REALLY don't have ANY power when I start up from a stop. It feels like I'm starting out in 3rd gear. I took the truck to my Auto Trans shop and had my friend look at it. My truck had a bad speed sensor 3 years ago and I burned up 3rd gear clutches. So, I thought the same thing was going on but when we pulled codes, we found that mine was tripping the TPS code. I guess I'll be putting in a knew TPS sensor. Anyone done that before?
Have you guys checked your codes? Mine tripped a "41".

If you check in that website that I posted in my previous post, you will find a lot of good info in it. You may want to try adjusting it first before replacing it. Problems can occur from it not being adjusted correctly.
If that doesn't fix it, then I guess it's time to replace it. I think the part runs about $100, but I'm not for sure.
Good Luck

Also make sure all the typical tune-up stuff looks good, like air filter (easy one to change), plugs (glad that worked !!!), wires (they should be fine....need to check by resistance), fuel filter and what most people ignore is to clean the throttle body with some carb cleaner (make sure it is sensor safe) and a toothbrush. You will see a noticeable difference in the idle if it was dirty before....idle will smooth right out.

I had the same problem. I had brought mine in for the 60K service interval and a couple of days later (today actually), my check engine light came on...so I brought it to the dealer that did the 60K service and they said it was the Throttle Position Sensor...they said they reset the computer and I shouldn't have that problem anymore, but I was curious...if they just cleaned the throttle body at the 60K service...why would that sensor trigger my check engine light on...?
It makes me wonder if they actually cleaned the TB or not...I should probably take a look tomorrow and clean it myself...!!!
Anyway...it seems to be running normal again...with little or no hesitation.

I never saw a dealer who really did what they say they are supposed to on a 60K service.....not to say they don't ever...but just very rarely. I would bet money you see carbon buildup in there. Be sure to open the throttle while you are cleaning. All the carbon will be right where the throttle plate contacts the throttle body housing. Open it and you'll see what I mean.
When you clean the throttle body you are not cleaning the sensor...they are totally separate. The TPS is just bolted on to the outside of the throttle body. If the sensor is bad it will need to be checked (with a meter) and if bad, replaced. If it is bad the check engine light may come on. If you reset the codes and the part is still bad then the light will come on again.
