ABS light and other issues...HELP!
Hi all, I have been having some issues with my 2000 4Runner Limited lately and am looking for some help. Last night on my way home from work, the ABS light on my dash lit up. I tested the brakes and sure enough, the ABS did not engage. I checked the fuses when I got home and did some poking under the hood at connectors and what not with no luck. I left the truck in my garage over night and when I came back out this morning, it started up with no warning light. I tested the brakes in my parking lot and this time the ABS kicked in like it should. No problems, right? Wrong. The light came back on when I was halfway to work this morning. I have read different forums about the speed sensors and the ECU. I am hoping the glitch is due to the weather. We have had snow and sub 20 degree tempertures here in Columbus all week. I am wondering if this glitch can be traced to the alternator?? I have noticed the lights dimming everytime the ABS has engaged this week and today when I started the car, the lights on the stereo flickered about 3 times right after start up. On Sunday, I took the truck through a laser wash to get the road grime off. It was about 17 degrees out when I took it through. The truck actually stalled in the bay in the middle of the wash. I am wondering if there is a short in the alternator, or maybe it is just getting old. The truck has 153k on it and I do not have a locking diff (apparently ABS does not engage with the diff lock on). Anyone else have this problem or have any suggestions. If this continues through the weekend, I will take the truck to a mechanic on Monday, I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts before I spend that money. Thanks in advance!

Did you check your brake fluid? Sometimes if it is low, I know on Hondas, the ABS light can come on. But the best thing to do is treat it like a check engine light. Take it to a shop to read the codes. The ABS system has codes just like the ECU does, same as the SRS system. If you get the ABS code, post it and then we can help you out so you are not guessing.

Well I took the truck into a local shop and they pulled the codes. One pointed to the actuator and the other pointed to the left rear speed sensor. They let the truck thaw out over night and could not get the light to come back on. I had not had any issues with it until today. The light came back on after driving in heavy snow and ice. I am assuming the speed sensor is shorting out somewhere because this only happens when driving in snow and ice.
