99 tacoma IFS locking hub conversion
i would like to change over to locking hubs. and where i could purchase kits or someone have them for sale maybe or links on how it is done. i would like to lock the front IFS and put on locking hubs.any info thanks .

They are the same exact kit, but ORS is $300 more expensive.
The only other option i know of is to go to a wrecking yard, and get the front spindles, axles, and out locking hubs from a tacoma with manual hubs. If you get the setup from the wrecking yard, you wont have to do any press work, or mess with the axles. It will be all bolt up.

thanks for all the info from everyone . this is so helpful. i was just wondering if i went to a junkyard for parts would anyone know what year ifs with manual hubs would work on my 99 tacoma how far back in model years would work. thanks much appreciated

try to find early taco's...usually the base/sr5 models came with them. unless you find manual hub'd spindles with ABS, you'll lose yours. thats assuming youve got ABS.
might want to research the swap...its a toss up on whether or not its worth it. there are pros & cons to the swap. i researched doing the swap...ended up getting a front ARB instead. money much better spent.

I have a set of manual wheel hubs off a 99 Tacoma...the knuckles are rusted but the wheel hub is in good condition. I'm hoping to have them pressed out this week to check the overall condition.
I can post some pics if you are interested.
If your rig has ABS then simply swapping spindles won't work for you....You'll need to get a set of new wheel bearings and do some press work.

Adding to DD's post: I'm gonna knock on wood but so far I haven't broken a CV shaft with the front locker & ADD. The guys that I know who have broke CV's (and pretty sure all those I've heard about) all have swapped to manual hubs and have the less stout shafts. Some of that may have to do with the type of front shocks selected, iirc the OME's will overextend the CV. I have yet to hear of someone with the stock front ADD system breaking a CV while using a locker. I'm sure they're out there, I just haven't run across them.
Anyway, once the CV is broke, there is no question a manual hub would be beneficial.

absolutely 111db. i never broke a CV either..and i've used my front ARB numerous times on difficult climbs. you just have to know when youve hit the limit with it, and not pass it. slow and easy is the way to go when youre front locked.
the add shafts are a bit thicker and more stout, and are easier to swap out on the trail since its only 5 nuts once youve got the wheel off. however, pulling the shaft can also be a life saver...
saving on wear and DT drag is minimal. that and trying to find a set of ABS spindles and the cost for new bearings+press work were my reasons for not going ahead with the swap. i found the front locker to be much more beneficial...

if you could send pics that would be cool . im new at what fits and dont fit or what exactly what to do . i might have a 86 ifs manuel hub front givin to me just not sure if it will work . im really not sure what way to go.thanks .any info is helpful.

the 99 taco is yours? early gen hubs wont work...completely different shaft/spindle setup. you'll have to stick with taco parts. check the sonoransteel link 111 posted up there ^^^. its for a runner, but same parts apply for taco's..since the parts are from tacos

Your truck doesn't have automatic hubs. It has ADD. Your CV axles are ALWAYS engaged to the spindle/hub assy. You can NOT disengage it at the spindle. Your system relies on an automatic disconnecting differential.
The reason it would not work for is indeed the ABS system, and you would have to trim the backing plate to fit your brakes (not a big deal).
On third gens, you have to have a complete kit to replace the unit hub bearing. You can't just remove the drive flange and bolt on manual hubs (like you can on the 2nd gens)

junk yard prices on parts??
Saw a donor in the yard today, got excited.. read about this swap, not sure if the spindle has ABS, already pulled the fuse on my runner. That pedal feel drives me nuts. I got quoted $240 but that was with out axles, didn't know I needed them. Not sure if the spindle was rusty or not. or going to need to do some pressing. Just want to know what I'm getting into! Is that a good price???

$240 is a great price, assuming it comes with the outer locking hubs and all hardware. We usually sell the complete kit for $525, which includes axles and everything needed.
No tacoma that ever had manual hubs had ABS btw, so you don't have to worry there.

I am assuming its all but the axles I could call back down there. but, little tight on money right now. put in a salvage motor and that set me back. They said spindle and all, so that being said I should just be able to swap the spindle put in the old cv's and be good to go?

just called a hundred a side! swap out mine with his just give him my old spindles and cv's and my boots are probably original from just about everything I have found on my runner..what ya think??
