99 sr5 4runner transmission problem

Once in a while after i back out of my driveway and put the trans in d it barely moves. I can manually put it into a lower gear and it will go just fine then put it into d and its fine. Or i can keep pressing on the gas and it will eventually go. After its moving its fine. The parking break isn't on. Trans fluid is full.

Anybody got any ideas?

How does the fluid look? How's the color? When was the last time you dropped the pan and changed the filter?

fluid looks ok, i've never changed the filter. it seems a lot of people have this same problem when their 4runner reaches about 138k miles. some suggest changing the battery. that sounds crazy. but no one seems to have a solution. the other 4runner owners seem to have good fluid and filters, but they exibit the same symptoms as mine.

Wasn't there a thread on this issue recently? Trying to remember, but I believe he dropped the pan and it was filled with goo. Cleaned it all out and was good to go. Might want to look into that.

If you've never dropped the pan and changed the filter then do it. How long have you owned it? Do you know if the previous owner did all the regular scheduled maintenance?

I have 191K on my trans and have never had any issues with it. 138K is really nothing on a Toyota (unless it's been neglected and not serviced regulary). Every 30K is the recommended trans service interval.

... that's weird... My GFs 2000 Limited 4x2 4Runner is doing this all of a sudden and its right at 138,000 miles... let me know if you find a fix!

It may sound weird, but a new battery fixed the problem on my GFs runner... give it a shot.

I had this exact same problem a few weeks ago with my transmission, I changed my 6 year old yellow top battery to a new Sears platinum battery for a trip I went on over the Thanksgiving holiday and the problem went away.

I just saw this post because I am researching cleaning the filter and changing out the transmission fluid because I don't know my 4 Runners past maintenance history.

well changin the battery might work bc if the battery is old and cannot push the required amps to engage the actuators in the trans then that would cause a problem bc the reason it would work after is bc the current from the alternator would rise with the rpm's

That is what I thought, but my mechanic friend disagrees with that theory because he said once the engine is started the alternator should provide enough power and amps for everything to run properly.

Hey since were on this note. The other day when i was driving my truck I turned down my subs so they were off and I came up to a stop light and the engine was at normal Rpm, no odd noises nothing, then i say my Volt meter drop like no tomorrow. It went for 14.1-14.2 to 11.9. Head lights dimm everything. then light turned green i hit the peddle and it shot right back up and was fine and didnt do it again till about 10 miles down the road. Same situation. but hasnt done it since then. Early signs of alternator failure maybe? O and it was sluggish taking off. The engine was running fine but the truck wasnt going no where in a hurry lol.

Most likely early alternator failure, like you said.

Same thing happened to my mom's car and she had the alternator changed and everything was fine again.

i dont mean to hijack this thread but just a quick newb question.

Iv'e read here that most peeps drop the pan first and do a transmission flush when servicing their trannies.

My questions are:

Can I flush the system first before i drop the pan and clean the filter? If not, why? advantages, disadvantages?

Im planning on servicing my tranny and put a separate tranny cooler. It has 100k and i dont know if the transmission has been serviced regularly.
