'98 4runner - tranny problems - HELP!
I searched and didn't find anything ....
My '98 V6 4x4 Auto (140k miles) is having problem shifting. It seems to pull very smoothly from idle to about 2500 rpm... then from 2500 to about 4k rpm it feels like the torque convertor is slipping or something. It accelerates - but is very jerky - not smooth. Then it smooths out again over 4k to redline.
I've also noticed that on light grades when the tranny is in OD it doesn't seem to be able to kick out of OD unless I hammer the throttle.
It seems to be a little better when I activate the "PWR" button which shifts a bit quicker.
The motor seems fine - always been meticulous about oil changes etc and I'm the original owner... so I'm nearly certain it's in the tranny/TC. I typically get the dealership to do a tranny service every season - maybe every other lately as I don't do any more towing with it.
Any help?
Thanks in advance.
Jim

Driveability problems are difficult to diagnose without being there, but it might not be a tranny problem.
Have you replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, ignition wires, cleaned the MAF, cleaned the throttle body.
All of those can cause hesitation.
It might even be the throttle position sensor.
The best suggestion is find a mechanic that specializes in driveability problems, they should be able to narrow it down quickly.
Good luck.

I had a similar problem with my tranny, it lasted about a year that way then the tranny went south.... Once it starts to slip, it creates excess heat. left as it is it will more than likley fuse some plates togeter (as mine did). Suggestion is to take it to a tranny shop for service/diagnosis and see what they say....
