98 4runner front wheel bearings

Going to be replacing both the front wheel bearings on my 4wd 4runner. I have the bearings only. Will try to keep the snap rings and seals in reusable condition. I want to use a bearing puller and reinstaller to do the job instead of using a press. Good idea or bad?

I have never used anything but a press.

Not even sure if a puller would work since I don`t have one apart to look at.

seals are cheap!

I'd def recommend replacing the seals when doing bearings.... RockAuto sells em pretty cheap (shipping might kill the deal though).

I've been involved with changing front hub bearings several times, in both middle-of-nowhere Nicaragua and back in "civilized" Los Angeles. EVERY time it's always involved a press. You might be able to get them off the hub with a puller.... but for sure you'll need a press to install new ones.

How many miles do you have on the 4Runner? I'm at 283,xxx miles (original owner) and am simply amazed that I've never had to replace any of the wheel bearings.

I would deffinetly do the seals, because if it leaks after you do the bearing and have every thing back together its a pain to go back through it all

Hey guys sorry it has been a while.
I did replace the wheel bearings in both front wheels. Took it for a test drive and the noise did was still there. Nothing changed. Also, the wheel bearings looks like they were in good condition. Anyway, I decided to rotate my tires just for the heck of it. Test drove it and the noise is GONE!!!! It's like night and day! The ride is nice and quiet now. Weird how the tires caused the noise at that level and slight vibrations. I felt real bad putting all that time into the truck when it was something as simple as rotating the tires. Oh well it was a good experience.

This video may be of interest to you... If I had the money I would just go to harbor freight and get one of their 20 ton hydraulic presses.. Only like 130.

The press would be a lot easier but this video shows you the process:

What kind of noise were you getting? Mine has developed a "whirring" noise when travels and braking at low speeds. I'm thinking it may be a bearing.

Did you get your kit from harbor freight and how much of a pain was the install? Did you have to cut it race to get it to budge?

When pressing out the bearing and then pressing new one on, what are people using in place of the Toyota SST? I realize a press is needed, but what is used to put the pressure evenly on the bearing?

Anyone in Atlanta area have the rear ABS ring remover and bearing remover tool I've seen on eBay? Or anyone want to make some extra $ if I remove the spindle and you remove/replace the bearing?

TIA,
Kevin
