98 4runner choke out, cleans, works, 6 months later chokes out again?

Hi,

Hope i can get the help of the experts on this board.
- last year my 4runner would not start, manually turned the choke a few times, and the 4runner started.
- about a week later it started choking out again.
- used choke cleaner, and worked for about 6 months then choked out again
- used choke cleaner again and 6 months later same thing...

Obviously a bigger issue is at hand. does anyone know / or has had this problem and how it can be fixed?

Had a friend who had something similar and used additive fuel cleaner - said it fixed it.. but i read some things online that using this stuff on a car that never used this (After 137K miles) can cause problems... again not too sure if this is legit or not. and questioning whether this would fix a choke problem (??)

I'm not too sure on this issue so any help that can be provided is really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The last (and only) 4runner to have a choke was built in 1984.
Get your terminology straight. Do you mean throttle?

I believe I have read about a spring type assembly that sticks-it can stick either open or closed-the part itself may just need replaced to give you more reliability.

Sorry I don't have any links to other threads but this has been discussed here or over on T4R.org.

Search using terms like 'sticking throttle 4runner' and often a Google search is more helpful than within the forums themselves.

Thanks for your time and the suggestion, I'll look into that spring and see if that is the problem.

Much appreciated.
