98 or 02 model?

OK guys, posted in another thread I was I the market for 4runner I had found a 95 with the 3.0 but decided to stay away from that motor all together.

I have narrowed it down to a 98 with 130,000 miles, new timing belt and water pump. Front bumper dented on both sides and tennis ball sized dent on rear door, back glass doesn't work and hatch wont lock or unlock from outside but does from inside. Paint is fading on places and antenna motor is broke. Mechanically everything seems great.

The 02 has the middle of the top portion of the bumper pushed in a little, could probably be knocked out. No dents on body, paint is still good with one significant scratch on rear door. Everything else works as it should with 163,000 miles. I have not driven this vehicle yet but is said to run great. Its been maintained regularly and has records.

Here is my question, prices are about $500 apart and I am wondering which is the better vehicle. I am hoping someone here that really knows the runners can give me some advice asap.

Go for the one that needs the least work. Check the frames rear ends rockers bumpers and under doors for rust. Look at the engine bay is it clean or not, check the air filter oil and tranny fluid. Make sure they are clean or have been changed. Look at the interior rips wear panels scratched etc. check all buttons see if everything works. Then obviously pick the better of the 2 and try to haggle on the price they might take less

Question 2 , or 4 wheel drive ?

The '02 will not have the locker options - last year for that was '00, so if you are looking for a 4 wheel drive it is something to consider.

Other than that, I would agree w/ crazypaint - go for the one requiring the least amount of work.

Good Luck !
