'97 4Runner LTD IAC?

I've had my '97 4R LTD for several months now and resolved a few minor things. Only thing bugging me now is when starting cold, it's about 10 minutes before it comes to a regular idle. Starts fine, starts out at about 1500 rpm and very gradually drops down. I don't turn the key, throw it in gear and go. I've always believed in 'warming up', or at least letting the engine run for a minute or 2 before driving. Running temp. is fine and warms up plenty fast but I don't like putting in gear before it idles down. I suspect the IAC device or what Toyota calls the 'Idle Air Control Valve'. Was also wondering about a temp sensor. I don't know exactly how this works or how it determines idle speed verses temperature.
Any help is appreciated. I've searched the forums and haven't found anything specific.

I agree. My sister turns the key and immediately throws it into gear and it drives me crazy. I tell her to let it warm up a bit, but of course she doesn't listen to me.

You could clean the IAC, that will smooth out your idle and probably drop your cold RPM's too, but 1500 sounds about right for cold idle.

Oh, and welcome to YT

Nothing wrong with your 4Runner. Normal behavior.

Yip, mine warms up for 5 - 10 minutes and goes from 1500 to about 650.

Hmmm. Ok, well I'll clean the IAC anyhow, can't hurt. Hey, truck runs great. just seemed unusually long for the idle to come down. Thanks guys and I'll post the results after I clean the IAC.
