97 4runner 2.7 trouble ahead
Ok, I searched for a 2.7/5spd taco/4run bought 97.4runner for 5,000, 217,000 miles drove almost a year no probs now overheating 1st thing replaced coolant and t-stat still overheating i had a cat code replaced w/LC headers and LC cat still overheating. Replaced IAC to eliminate check engine light NOW throws random misfire code at me.
So i think it's BHG, so what else is advised to replace while heads off?? timing chain?
And how much $ diff is there in just putting used motor in. My tech will be doing this not I. What are the chances some internal engine parts has been damaged from me overheating about 5 times not red, just boiling coolant.
And this is more opinion question considering it needs new brakes, tires, shocks is it WORTH IT? would YOU give this one some TLC? or just take another chance & buy another 2.7/5spd setup. I know im going to end up spending more than whats it worth thats okay cause you cant find a damn 2.7/5spd 4runner round

I would try fixing the engine in the runner you got now, or replacing it if you can find a good used engine.
I love my 2.7 4runner 5spd, and there are not that many around. If i had to replace it I would find a 2.7 ext cab taco, but i don't want that to happen.

I mean the 2.7L is a good engine...I'd say if you go ahead and change out the chains and guides you'll be good to go for awhile. A used engine will run you probably at least 1000 and then some so...i mean...your call. It depends what you can find an engine for and what your tech is charging...
Like I said...if done right...a rebuild on the 2.7 is fairly straight forward and should last...IF done right. Or you could just run into more trouble....so...
