Exclamation 96 4runner E-locker mod: I want to be able to use it whenever.. HELP!

I can't find this mod after searching for it... It's usually called the grey wire mod... This is the mod for a tacoma.. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/minutemods/greywire_mod/ .... but its too vague and i know its the blue wire with red stripe for 4runners..

Anyone know of any GREAT write-ups on this?

Also........

Some dumb questions..

What specific driving situations is the e-locker used for?

Are there any negative consequences to doing the "grey wire mod"?

What gears can the e-locker be engaged in?

Can the e-locker be engaged while driving? If so at what speeds?

What is the maximum recommended speed to use the e-locker?

Thanks bgmac...

I found the info. --->>>
"Disabling ECU Safeties - The locker ECU comes with two built-in safeties. One safety requires you to be traveling below 5mph for the locker to engage (once engaged, there is no speed limit). The second safety requires you to be in 4LO. To disable the 4LO safety, you have to cut the '4WD' line, which is pin #8 (blue/red) on the ECU, and ground it. The locker will now work in 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO. To disable the 5mph safety, you do the same thing, but with the 'SPD' line, which is pin #10 (green/orange). I chose to disable the 4LO safety while leaving the 5mph safety intact. Refer to the previous diagrams for pin locations."

So why are these safeties built-in? Are there any hazards associated with locking the differential above 5 mph? and in 2HI and 4HI??

The locker is generally for slow crawling over rocks, thus why it has the two safties...

You dont want to engage it while over 5MPH but its fine to have it on over that..

Hell my diff is locked at 70MPH all the time..

The serious hazard of locking the diff while moving is that
A) The sudden change from being essentially "one" wheel drive to "two" wheel drive could affect your control.
B) The gears don't like it when you try to make them lock at a high rate of speed.

I have had the "grey wire mod" done since I bought my truck. I don't lock it unless I'm under 5 mph, but I have had it up to 65 mph while locked.

I don't see any reason why it would be a problem to engage while in 4 hi, 4 lo, or even 2wd, as I have regularly done each, with NO ill effects.

70?
Why in the world would you need the locker while you're cruising on the 15?

That I can't help you on, as the Tacoma and the Runner have a different color lead. I didn't read the link from Sonoran Steel, but I would imagine, knowing Steve's reputation, that he lines it all out.

I know it has been done, and can be done. And, in my opinion... should be done. I like having the most amount of control over my vehicle and it's accoutrements as possible.

I geared my question so that it wouldn't matter the color of the wire.. I was just asking what I actually do to the wire..

accoutrements... that's a new one

It's a manual cable for the locker. It eliminates the need for the wire all together. From what I've read, the consensus on their durability and functionality are somewhat split.
