'96 4runner driver mirror vs. '97 > '02

Hey y'all -

Here's something I noticed. The driver and passenger door mirrors on my 1996 4Runner are slightly different from the mirrors on the 1997 - 2002 models.

The "newer" mirrors have more "space" between the door mount and the mirror itself -- the stick out farther. I wondering if this was for wind noise?

Anyway, I need a new driver mirror and was wondering if the newer style mirror will work on a 1996? Anybody know?

Finally - does anyone know a good source to buy the mirror from?

Thanks a lot!

I would say check all the junk yards around you. And if you can't find any there or feel like getting a new one, Pm TOR on here, he'll set u up.

Mirrors

Well these are a little tricky and they definitely aren't cheap. Send me you VIN # and I can tell you first what your stock mirror would be and then what else may fit it.

THe newer mirrors are rounder and less square like pre 98's.

Mirror Info

Mjamfunk,

87910-35400-C0 Right mirror $143.95
87940-35370-c0 Left mirror $143.95

These mirrors span from 11 of 95 to 08 of 96. As far as others working on this for newer models, they look to me in the system as different bolt patterns.

Got it. Thank you very much for the detail.

I will let you know if I decide to order them. Yes, definitely pricey. I think maybe I'll live with a hacked-up mirror for awhile.

best,

mike,

i used to own a 99 and now i have a 98. the mirrors on the 99 do not make as nearly as much wind noise as the 98s do.

thats just my observation.

Bob,

Yes, that's what I've experienced as well. I just wish the newer style would fit the 1996.

It does not seem there is any evidence to support that it would.

thanks,
mike--

The mirror change, specifically the distance from the door, was changed to reduce wind noise. There is a TSB that lists different parts like door seals to recude wind noise. I have changed all the parts on my 96 except the mirroros.

Is there anything in that TSB that suggests the newer style mirrors will fit a 1996 model?

Yes they will. The mounts are all the same.

I stand corrected, let me know if anyone needs a new set. FYI there is no way to obtain a new mount through me without buying the whole assembly. Unless Gadget has part numbers that I don't know about.

Gadget:

What did you replace and if you don't mind me asking, how much did it all cost?
*edit* forgot to ask: Did you notice a difference after replacing all the items?

I drive a lot of freeway miles and the wind noise bugs me a lot...

You can go to alldata.com and search for the TSB on windnoise for the 96 4Runner.

It seems that my 97 already has all the improved stuff installed.

If I remember correctly, it involved replacing the door seals, some weather stripping around the window and windshield. I did not do the mirrors. My 97 has the different mirrrors.

They appear to be the same mirror just the part that connects it to the truck is longer so it moves the mirror further away from the truck body. The bolt pattern and everything else is the same so any third gen mirror should be able to be installed on any 3rd gen truck.

It is my guess that if you have a mid year 97 or later all the changes should of been incorporated at the factory.

Doh. I bought my truck in July of 97 so I guess I have the new stuff. It's still loud though. So I guess the next step is to get the even later 3rd gen mirrors which look a little more roundish...

I have been looking at the mirrors for all 3rd gens...and actually the 96-99 mirrors are the same. In 2000 they made the mirror more round and they made it stick out more. This is the only way to tell apart all year 4Runners.

cosmetically:
96-97 you can't tell apart visually
98 has a 4-spoke steering wheel and different outlets in the back as well as a turn-style climate control.
99 has new bumper, headlights, grille, dashboard, full time 4-wheel drive and other things
00 is the same as 99 visually....the only way to actually tell these models apart is by the side-view mirrors. 99 has the square-like one and 00 has the round one.
01-02 just changed the taillamps and front grille.

I know the subject of telling apart 99 and 00 has come up many times, but nobody seemed to know the answer.
