95 Brakes Clunk then Mushy then OK
Hi. Was riding along in my 95 runner when clunk from the rear right back end. When I stopped, I could smell burning something from the rear right wheel hub. Drove it home and clunk again, and no more smell.
Two days later the pedal, usually quite firm, started alternating occasionally mushy. almost to the floor, then quite firm again. I don't see any indication of fluid leeks, and the parking brake holds quite well.
Any suggestions what could be going on?

Maybe your hold-down springs or top cup for your rear drum shoes failed. I would take it apart and look. Your shoes may scor your drums.
Drums=$50-100
Hold down springs and Top cups=$5-10

Well the both of the right rear brake shoes had literally come off and were floating around. I'm amzed there was not more continual noise.
Since Toyota (American, Albuquerque) did a full brake job four months ago, the only thing I can think is perhaps they did not glue these on so well. Fortunatly, no other damage was done, and the cost of these parts is low.
