All the cases i've read about of splines twisting off of a shaft are the big boys on POR with rear spool or welded diff, 40+ inch tires and hopped up motors. Breaking one on a stock truck is VERY rare.

I don't think there is any way to link that to the gas tank work you had done. They may have removed the driveshaft to make room to drop the tank. That wouldn't cause a diff or axleshaft to break though.

Sorry to hear about the trouble. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input guys!

Got my Truck back today.

I saw my old axle and I saw where the teeth were completly smooth???

Has anyone seen their axle? When I looked at it I could see about 2 1/2" - 3" of teeth, but, only the end 1/4" or so was smooth??

I could see where something was covering over beyond the teeth but it appears that only the last 1/4" where it is smooth appears to be where the axle makes contact to the diff??? Am I explaining this correctly?

It seems odd to me that the axle would have the teeth for 3 inches and only use the last 1/4"???

I have only had it for the past 3 years priot to that I don't know the history so it is possible they mistreated it I guesS????

What I really can't figure out is why I felt/heard the big bang when trying to move from a stop? It sounded and felt like I was rear ended?? I can't figure out what would make that sound and pressure on the axle????

Thanks again.

Marc

You should hear a big bang, it was a lot of damage. You apparently just stripped all those gears off at once. Think about how much force that would take. Remember, the gearing multiplies the torque of your engine many times over. Think about how hard it would be do take that bar in your hand, stick it in the gear and spin it. Well your truck does that daily and very fast, so it likely would feel like a minor explosion back there when it broke.
