86 toy transmission & carb question/advice
Hey Y'all
I'm thinking of buying an 86 4x4, It's got a carb not EFI, so I was wondering your thoughts on the carb. are they low maintenance and reliable? I've never owned a carb vehicle, so any help would be appreciarted...
Also, he said that the 5th gear dosent work and that it needs a new linkage in the tranny or something. Any one know what he's talking about or what the cost of fixing this is??? BTW it's a manual..
thanks!!
Trevor

My 86 has a carb also. I rebuilt it about 6 yrs ago. Acceleator pump was going , so I bought to whole rebuild kit($25-30) and did it myself. Was pretty easy if you take your time. Never really had any issues offroading with a carb.
Not sure on the tranny thou. It might be cheaper to find a good used tranny then fixing that one.

if 5th gear is shot, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse are probably close behind. no toyota transmission in any of their pickups in the last 20 years or so have had any external linkage to worry about. time to keep looking, or to find a rebuilt transmission.
no real issues with the carb -- the ones toyota used on the 22R engines never have any major issues, except with age the accelerator pump and auxillary accelerator pump(AAP) diaphragms wear out and need to be replaced.

thanks for the wisdom... I'll probably pass on it because of the tranny problem. It's selling at such a great price, that some times things are too good to be true...
Thanks for the help
