86 4runner rebuilt engine burning oil
I just had a rebuilt engine put in my 86 4runner and they told me at the shop that it would evaporate oil because it had bigger pistons and it had to break in for about 5000 miles? Today I checked after 400 miles it's burned 3/4 of a quart . That seems like alot to me. Is that true what they said about the pistons or did I get worked? They put in 10w40 castrol I think. I was thinking I might switch to 20w50? Any thoughts?

Is it smoking out the tailpipe? Does it run rough? Any other bad things going on?
Who put the oil in to start with? The shop? You? I find it quite difficult to know if I've lost 3/4 of a quart or whatever by looking at a normal dipstick. As long as it is in between the "full" marks...
I just had my 85 22RE rebuilt - 12 month unlimited mileage parts/labor warranty. Dino oil until 500 miles. Changed oil/filter and still dino. Run until 3000 miles switch to Royal Purple synthetic and change every 5000 miles after that. Ain't no way I'd put oil that heavy in my engine, but that is just me.
Good luck

You want to run a lighter weight oil in a fresh motor so the rings have a chance to seat. Every good mechanic I've talked to said to run 30 weight oil to start. If you go to a synthetic too soon, the rings never will seat very well and a heavy oil will have the same effect.
Since you already have 400+ on it, get an oil change (as you should on a fresh motor anyway around 500 miles) and get some 30 weight oil in it.
Opinions vary on the necessity, but it would also be a good time to have the head bolts retorqued. Some say it doesn't matter, but why risk a blown headgasket down the road due to improperly torqued head?
Just an opinion.
