5th Gear whines at contant speed
It's not a big deal, but when I'm at contant freeway speed 5th gear makes an irritating whining gear noise. When I either accelerate or decelerate it stops.
I'm guessing it indicates a worn gear or something but I'm not sure and I'd like to know before it blows up on the freeway. How bad does the noise have to get before it dies? In general. Obviously, no two situations will be the same but general advice or similar experiences will be appreciated.
Thanks

I will bet you a box of donuts that it is not a gear, but a bearing problem. Either way the fix is the same, replace the tranny.
You might want to give Marlin at Marlin Crawler a call. He is about the smartest Toyota manual tranny guys I know. I am sure he can get you fixed up or at least give you a better idea on what exactly is wrong. Do let me know if I was right or not.

O.k., Gadget. Marlin says first check for broken front left motor mount and then low gear oil and listen for noise in 3rd and 4th. He says bearings in the tranny I have (92-95) shouldn't make noise until after 200,000 and I have 131,000. If those check out o.k. then call him about how to get my new $1,300 tranny shipped (partially refundable). OUCH!

Marlin is a talker isn't he??
Engine mount making the tranny whine?? I never would of thought of that one, but that is why I referred you to him.
Sometimes bearings can just go bad. I had to replace all the bearing in the transfer case of the APC I rebuilt. They were all shot to hell and that allowed the safts to have to much play in them. Under load it was fine, but when you got up to speed and let off the gas just enough to allow slack in the drive line, all hell broke loose. It was the most horrible sound you can imagine, like all the gear teeth being ripped off. It only had 9000 miles on it, but was about 30 years old. The new bearings fixed it right up and I saved $14,000 that it would of cost to get the transfer case overhauled.
