4x4 newbie los angeles
hi everyone
i've owned a '99 4 Runner since Feb 2000. Just starting to finally make use of 4x4 feature. Are there any clubs / schools in the Los Angeles area where I can learn to drive offroad?
thanks

Welcome newbie!
I don't know about LA, but if you head down to AZ, Steve S would love to break someone new in.
There is a CA4ROC in Cali, not sure where the guys are located. There seems to be frequent trips - tag along. I'm sure you'll pick up some good advice...

yeah, not any schools that i know of, you just gotta join up with some local guys for the periodically planned trip. like goodtimes pointed out, the next major one is the anza borrego trip (at least from the yotatech crowd). there are actually a few so cal 4x4 clubs, but i think they're mostly jeepers (not that that's a bad thing). a quick internet search could probably turn up a few.
where are you at in LA? i'm from santa clarita. there's a few good wheelin spots around there.

There are alot of trails to hit up in the Los Angeles area so I'm sure one of us will post up some weekend (sat or sun) day runs open for all members (4wd/2wd).
Just keep your eyes open in this section or in the "off road trip planning..." section

If you have any q's just ask We're all here to help out!

Here's something else this weekend
In case you're looking to get out. This one's not a freebie 'cause it's a fund raiser. http://www.cal4wheel.com/pm4wdc/fright.htm
The Point Mugu club is a sister club to the one I'm in www.GoldCoastCruisers.com and we jointly sponsor the event. Our trips are normally free, as they should be.
It's this weekend BTW and if you show up just ask any of the Toyota's for Lars and they'll point you my way. A couple of my friends are leading the bunny slope runs for those new to wheeling and I'm sure you'd have a blast.

We might be able to help more if you know what you would like to do. What kind of things do you like? 4Xing, Camping, Exploring, Geology, History?

thanks for all the replies.
i've just gotten back from a 14 day 4509 mile trip, most on back and forest roads in california, oregon and washington. on one day i took a 'shortcut' from gold beach in oregon to grant's pass. there was a minor problem, it was raining, it was a very deep gorge with no guard rails, it was 5.30pm, the cloud level had dropped, it was a forest road, the road was very badly eroded to the point that they changed it to one way and FINALLY there was a detour of the forest road to basically find your own way down the mountain! it took me over an hout to do the last 10 miles.
i'm a photographer and the best pictures are off the beaten path. i would lke to learn the skills needed so that the next time i find myself in similar situations, i'll be saying 'hey this is fun'
joyce
