4WD Not Working - 2000 4Runner 5spd
Hello YotaTech...
Truck: 2000 4Runner Highlander
Engine: 3.4L
Trans: 5 Speed
Symptom - 4WD doesn't work and won't engage. I shift in to 4H, the transfer case is working as the front drive axle turns, but the front diff won't lock up. Indicator light on the dash also doesn't light up.
I've read the "master" thread on this issue located below, but it appears that most of that troubleshooting is for automatics with a different 4WD system than what the 5 speeds use. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/4...er-ltd-131201/
I was able to follow TheDurk's troubleshooting steps:
After troubleshooting... I get to the point where I put the truck in 4H, but the blue VSV (back one toward the firewall) never gets power.
What and where is the switch / sensor that controls power to the VSVs?
Sounds like it is on the transfer case?
Everything else in TheDurk's troubleshooting steps works as expected, but it's obvious after running tests with a multi-meter that the blue VSV is not getting power, hence no vacuum, hence no 4WD (that's the theory).

I had the exact symptoms on my wife’s 99 4runner. I found a broken vacuum tube to be the culprit. It was one of the smaller tubes and is located toward the front of the engine on the driver’s side as I recall. I did some FSM research to help track it down. Must be part of the VSM plumbing described above. Sorry, I do not recall the specifics as it was too long ago.

Thanks iBil... I'm fairly confident my vacuum hoses are ok, if I switch them at the VSVs I can get the truck in to 4H (which leads me to believe that the vacuum hoses and ADD actuator are working).

After spending some time at the dealer looking at part numbers, I replaced the following 2 Transfer Case Indicator Switches on the Transfer Case.
Sensor Number 1 - 84222-35110
Sensor Number 2 - 84222-35080
These sensors are located in the top of the transfer case, they are opposite of each other.
I'm not sure which switch went bad, but 4x4 is working again without issues.
