4Runner starting to shake on highway
My '99 Runner has a vibration at around 65-70mph. Does this mean it's time for me to get some new tires? My friend has an 02 Runner and had the same problem. She bought new tires and still has the problem. Someone at her office told her to get her wheels balanced at a Toyota dealer because they have a special wheel balancer that many off-site places don't have. Once she does this, they say her vibration will go away. Has anyone heard of that?

there are many threads about this
this is most likely caused by unbalanced tires. The hunterforce balancing machine is the best if i recall correctly.
Also, make sure you have them torque your wheels to the correct amount. i think its 72 ft-lbs
Its important that you do this asap so you dont wear your tires funny and dont warp your rotors.

It can be a real hit or miss and can vary depending on the make of tire as well.
If you still have problems after, post back.

Okay so bringing the truck to a Toyota dealer will be better than bringing it to my local tire shop .....???
I don't know what kind of tires I have ... I want to say maybe Bridgestones or Goodyear but not completely sure.

Dealer can actually be pretty cheap (cost-wise) for mount and balance too.

I've had success w/ road-force balancing but it has to be done by someone you trust. I've noticed that the chain places tend to hire people that don't have a clue on how to use the real expensive equipment.
We have a local alignment shop by me that's been in business forever. They do a great job on balancing tires.

I did not go to Toyota but I did specify using a "lug Centric" adapter. I have a small vibration still but I would bet it is from the tires because I have had vibrations, on and off, for the life of these tires (50k).

I've had the same problem right around 65 on my 3rd Gen. I first noticed it right after I got my lift (OME at Slee). Even when I did the alignment and balance RIGHT after the lift, the problem remained. I've gotten all kinds of different advice from the need to realign the driveshaft to getting a panhard bracket drop, and it took me about a year to realize that the real problem was that when they put the new suspension in, they probably rotated the tires, which I had delayed rotating, causing uneven wear. It got slowly better until - you guessed it - I again waited too long to rotate the tires, and it happened again! Finally, the tires seem to have broken in on all rotation combinations, and the vibration has pretty much totally disappeared.
