4Runner (or possibly Tacoma) Auto transmission interchangeability
Hey Guys
Did some searching around but still haven't quite found the answer:
In regards to the 4Runner, from what I understand there was a change mid-99 in the A340 (Valve body) and possibly again in 01-02 (I'm not sure if there was any change though, and if so what was changed - drive by wire? hydraulic vs. vacuum?)
The reason I ask is I want to know what the interchangeability between the T4R (and even the Tacoma). Would a 96 auto work in a 2000 4runner despite the valve body changes (or any other changes I'm not aware of)?? It has the same no. of solenoids and all, so I might take a shot in the dark and say yes, but not sure if the ECU or anything would be a factor?
What about a V6 Tacoma transmission in a 4 runner, if so what year tacoma into what year 4runner? (I have no idea if and when any changes were done to the taco's transmission).
Thanks!!

Hey thanks for the quick reply. Well I think I answered my own questions just by finding my build date.
You nailed it, I think I might have to replace my transmission (potential milkshake on my hands - but not diagnosed yet), and if I can find a replacement for cheap enough, I might skip the transmission flush and fingers crossed and go right for a replacement.
It is 3/99 and is an SR5 V6 4x4 -- so I think any 96-99 transmission should work. I am still curious if a late 99-00 transmission will work though, and of course overlap w/ Tacoma's.
The other question too then is if somehow the t-case is also damaged in this whole fiasco.
Shoulda-woulda-coulda. Ugh, I can't believe I might have a milkshake on my hands. I hate myself right now!

So when I noticed some slipping (only when at a stop light and first engaging, once rolling it was totally fine and smooth for the 1.5 mile I drove it), it was single digits outside and I was close to a friends house so I parked it there for now and can't check for a day or two. I quickly checked when I was there, but didn't have too much time (was on my way out of town).
I know this sounds stupid, but the coolant is red (normally) and all ATF I've ever worked with is red, so at that moment between fear, horror, and panic (was leaving for an interview) it was a little hard for me to tell. I didn't see any frothy shake though. There was a small pool of what smells like ATF around it when I left.
Let's work on the assumption that, worse case scenario, it is a shake...?

Well..Id be willing to bet. That if there is fluid leaking....you are probably a quart or 2 low on trans fluid. That would make it slip if its low enough.
Did you check the fluid level while it was running?
If you milkshaked it...you would have overheated...engine...and trans temp light would of came on.
Lets get real basic...check the fluid level first and foremost.
